Hackers try to blackmail Mitt Romney with his own tax returns (Claim to Steal Returns For Ransome)

Is there some great big secret buried in Mitt Romney's old tax returns? Though the Republican candidate for president has made his most recent years' returns public, Democrats have been demanding he release them all, presumably so they can mine the forms for things to attack him over. But maybe it's not Democrats Romney has to worry about: A group of computer hackers claim to have stolen Romney's tax returns from accounting firm PWC, and are threatening to release them to the public if the former Massachusetts governor does not fork over a million dollars.

According to the hackers, the break-in occured at a Tennessee PWC office on August 25. They claim to have gained access to the third floor via a man who works in the building. Once inside, the team allegedly entered a second floor suite containing a number of Mitt Romney's tax documents. The thieves supposedly copied all Romney's available financial documents, put them on encrypted flash drives, and mailed them to the local Republican and Democratic parties.

Sure, blackmail is always an appealing and endearing strategy.

In all probability, Romney paid taxes but his returns were very complicated and took advantage of whatever deductions or credits or exemptions or allowances his professional CPA’s could find for him.
A little political embarrassment is possible, but remember CLinton’s big deductions for his used underwear donations.
I doubt there is much in Romney’s returns that could be more embarrassing than that, and CLinton is still being touted around as “very popular’

This could be solved very quickly in my opinion, as there is first an individual who allegedly granted access to the perps to get into the offices of Price Waterhouse Cooper. Second, I would be surprised if there were not the most rudimentary security/surveillance system in place at the facility where the crime took place. Third, the flash drives used can be forensically dissected which can yield information on the system used to generate the data set on the flash drive.

Of course this presumes there is a real drive (no pun intended) to catch the perps, as this story does nothing but add ammo to the ‘Rat mee-mee about ‘Romney not paying taxes’, ad nauseum.

Heres a possiblity. Team O has his hacks CLAIM to have hacked Romney’s tax returns. Further, they claim to want a million in ransom to not release them. This gives the impression there is something very damning contained within.
They may even claim a ransom was met. This also supports the idea that there was something very damning contained within.
They may not have actually have his tax forms. They don’t actually need them to accomplish their goal.. Which is to make it appear there is something damning in his tax returns.

Perhaps Holder already received a copy of all of the returns for the last 20 years from the head of the IRS and couldn’t find anything really bad so decided to see how much mileage they could get out of some political spin.

I always thought if you were going to blackmail someone, you wouldn’t want it public until they failed to pay.
Does seem odd to announce to the world you broke a whole variety of laws and where you can be found?

Last I checked, extortion was still a crime. Oh wait... not if the perpetrators are Democrats. My mistake.
