Not saying that Mr. Stevens paraded his lifestyle but the person responsible for sending him there had to have known there would be clash of cultures before he was sent and the risk of death if he was discovered.

Correct.

There are plenty of gay Arabs and plenty of gay Arab leaders - Arafat for one, but the rumors are always thick about lots of others. And lets not get started with the religious leaders.

The whole problem here was overconfidence and negligence, plus our institutional incompatibilities with whats needed to get the job done in these other cultures.

T.E. Lawrence, for one, had the knowledge and foresight and leeway to create his own personally loyal Bedouin security detail, which he selected and recruited himself using his knowledge of clan loyalties. This sort of thing squares the circle of scary foreigners (Marines, Blackwater) providing security but annoying the locals vs unreliable and compromised local officials. That sort of thing has been bureaucratized out of the options available to our modern Lawrences.

Whoa....

This wasn’t his first assignment to Libya. He was there in different positions from 2007-2009, and also in 2011.

I think its a stretch to blame Hillary for his death (unless the discussion turns to embassy security).

He was a tremendously courageous man and the fact that he happened to be gay is just a footnote.

No it is not just a footnote but a diplomatic blunder on a massive scale.

Nobody is stating anything against him being gay as a person only on the methodology behind the idiots in our government who thought sending a gay man as ambassador to an islamic country was a good idea, instead of someplace where his life would not be in danger because of his gay life style like Europe.

These threads are about a diplomatic department that does not have a clue about who they are dealing with on such a level that it is mind boggling.

This story has no traction....and his first assignment to Libya was in 2007.

It’s pure coincidence, but Stevens bears a strong likeness to Peter O’Toole, when he played TE Lawrence in the movie..( maybe someone can do a side by side) Lawrence’s sexual orientation in part explained his attraction to the Arab world.

That's the actual T.E. Lawrence, not Peter O'Toole.

Lawrence died in 1935, at age 46, from a motorcycle accident in the UK.

Not all gays wear their sexuality on their sleeve. You
may even know a gay or two without knowing it. Per-
sonally, those who keep their activities to themselves
do not bother me at all. I work w/a few gays and I’m
on friendly terms with a few lesbians. Even invited to
a lesbian wedding recently. I asked “When is it?” She
answered “Next February”. I replied “Ah, I’m busy that
day”. She laughed.

I don’t know if Ambassador Stevens was gay but he was
born in my small hometown and I had the pleasure of
having his grandfather Elmer “Chief” Stevens for a
substitute teacher several times in HS. That folks are only
speculating about the sexual preference of Chris Stevens
is a sign to me that he was not one to flaunt his sexuality
and I doubt that bastards who killed him knew or cared.

. . . centuries of Islamism's practice of consanguineous marriages produced this madness? They cannot be dissuaded.. this could be the reason that they only respond to overwhelming power as any insane person is likely to obey.

Notice I said Islamism to indicate that I believe that it is a minority that is the problem.

His life was in danger because he was an American. His life was in danger because his bosses are so incredibly stupid they did not protect him with the full force of the US Military.

His rape was not only a disrespect to him personally, but also a message to our government...who surely know the truth of this no matter what they say.

The only version of that story I've seen was from a Lebanese news story in Arabic, which claimed that Stevens got the same treatment as Gaddafi. I suspect it's just the bad guys trying to claim credit for more evil than they actually accomplished.

More reliable reports are that Libyan friendlies transported Stevens suffering from smoke inhalation from the burning consulate to the Benghazi Medical Center, where he died. Reportedly, the Libyan doctors worked on him for 90 minutes before giving up. They also reported he had no injuries inconsistent with smoke inhalation. Stevens had been scheduled to meet with some of those same doctors the next morning in order to hook them up with American doctors eager to help them improve the BMC's operation.

J. Christopher Stevens, U.S. ambassador to Libya, dies at 52

Mr. Stevens had served in Israel, Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia, but Libya became the center of his career. He served there three times, beginning in the years before Gaddafi fell, when the mercurial leader was trying to repair decades of poor relations with Washington. Mr. Stevens was the No. 2 U.S. diplomat in Libya from 2007 to 2009.

It's Bush's fault! /s

Everything I have read about Ambassador Stevens has been nothing less than honorable. I do feel that someone who may have known he was gay and still let him stay in Libya, knowing the feelings muslims have for gays, did him a huge disservice.

Working in aviation, most gay flight attendants I know, are loud and proud. This is not to say all gays are but I do think they are sheltered here in the US and should not expect the same attitude in other countries.

I can only hope the animals who tortured and killed Ambassador Stevens are captured and burned alive.

Whatever Stevens orientation it was not his first rodeo;
he knew the risks. He might have become a little too
complacent. Of course that does not excuse sheClinton
and Obama.
