Campaign Mailer: Romney Vows to Fight the 'Epidemic' of Lyme Disease in Virginia SEP 28, 2012 • BY JOHN MCCORMACK

A WEEKLY STANDARD source living in Northern Virginia passes along photos of the first piece of mail the source has received from the Romney campaign. Instead of focusing on a big issue--say, Obamacare, the debt, or taxes--the mailer is about Lyme Disease:

LYME DISEASE: A MASSIVE EPIDEMIC THREATENING VIRGINIA.

ROMNEY AND RYAN WILL DO MORE TO FIGHT THE SPREAD OF LYME DISEASE.

Here's the text for the rest of the mailer:

It's a disease that begins from a small bug...

But Lyme Disease has quickly become the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, devastating our families and our pets.

It's a serious problem - that demands immediate attention.

As president, Mitt Romney will ensure that real action is taken to get control of this epidemic that is wreaking havoc on Northern Virginians.

IMPROVE SYNERGY Ensure that government agencies have an open line of communication and work with patients, researchers, doctors, and businesses in an objective, comprehensive manner.

I lived in Williamsburg Va for a year...We had the critters in our office. One night I felt something bite me on my stomach...I pulled it off...put it in saran wrap and put a circle around the bite so I could track it.

I lived with no consequence....but someone in our office wasn't so lucky...and wound up almost totally crippled.

This better not be from the campaign. Better be a superpac. I can not see how they would be spending money on this. Whiskey tango foxtrot.

Well, obviously Romney is hitting Obama where it hurts now.
We need a Blueribbon National Lyme Disease Task Force.

Obama is done for.

Seriously, Who the hell is running this guy’s campaign? We are all in deep sh*t if no one sacks these strategists assuming its not too late. This is the stuff of SNL.

Lyme disease is a real plague, and it’s worse on Cape Cod and Nantucket.

One of the ways to control it is to reduce the density of deer!

WTF? Lyme is a problem, but what 'real action' is he contemplating? Lyme's hit my family, and what we found out is that the doctors, insurance companies, and state boards all drag their feet on looking at any treatment beyond 30 days of a mild antibiotic; that is if they don't dismiss the whole problem out of hand.

There are medical approaches that work, but doctors have been sued for using them. The other reasonable approach that works is DDT. Romney will be in deep trouble with the media if he supports either one of them. The third and unreasonable approach is to move everybody into cities like New York, where there are only about 4 blades of grass per citizen.

It's a problem worthy of discussion, but it's really not one suitable for discussion in a purely political environment.

Check the fine print... sure there isn’t a “I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message”?

I know, it’s like something a local Congress critter or a state rep might talk about

That was our experience as well. And the one physician who took it seriously was an alternative medical practitioner who kept trying to get a celiac diagnosis, in spite of tests coming back negative, time after time. Oh, and heavy metals - said it was tin poisoning at one point.
