Sunday Reflection: The importance of showing up
Washington Examiner ^ | 9-29-12 | Glenn Harlan Reynolds

Last month, I wrote that though Woody Allen once said that 80 percent of life is showing up, in politics it's more like 100 percent. With the election now just weeks away, that statement is looking truer and truer.

The polls show the presidential race neck and neck. But that's among people who respond to polls. The actual election will hinge on who actually shows up to vote.

Pollsters try to account for this with "likely voter" models, which adjust the raw data based on who's likely to go to the trouble to vote not just spout off to a pollster. But those models are more art than science.

So the outcome hinges on who's genuinely motivated enough to vote -- and to encourage other, like-minded voters to do the same. In politics, this is called the "ground game," and it gets a lot less attention than the "air game" of TV commercials, etc., because, well, covering the ground game requires reporters to get off their butts and report, as opposed to just channel-surfing.

“Just go vote. That means you Freepers who have been on the soapbox about never voting for Mitt. Just do it!! BHO has got to go.”

Yes, I do both, discuss and will definitely vote for Mitt.

That said, I was called into the carpet this week at work and advised that my political views are divisive and told that moving forward, I was not to engage in any political discourse in the office, (just myself, no others — all kinds of lefty talk abounding).

No specifics were given as to the nature of any of my ‘divisive’ remarks. After being told how intelligent I was, (no fewer than 8 times in the discussion), just that I needed to use better judgment.

Additionally, since I travel frequently for work, I was told that this speech-code included time spent on commercial planes and during meals with co-workers on travel.

Was quite difficult to allow the pissant to continue with his arrogance....

Ahh well, I will continue to be myself and will cross whatever bridges that presents.

It’s times like that when I wish we were still able to challenge others to a duel.

Dude I think you have a major discrimination lawsuit. I would speak with an attorney. If your company wants to tell everyone no politics in the office maybe they can do that but not just you. Maybe you find all the lefty talk divisive. I would sue the carpola out them.

I was food shopping last week when I overheard a conversation from the next aisle. It was a supermarket employee talking about the national situation. He was not shy about expressing his grievances against Obama. I have never heard anything like this, it really made my day.

“Dude I think you have a major discrimination lawsuit.”

I’m not into the sue your employer thing. Besides, before doing that you have to go through the whole notification up the chain of command to actually bring the company into it.

But he’d best keep his i’s dotted and his T’s crossed! He’s a world class tool!

I operate under a much higher level of respect within my organization than he, so I’m not overly concerned...

He’s on my $h1+ list though!
