Obama Didn’t Save the Auto Industry: He Took Away 2,200 Dealerships and 120,000 Jobs
Laycatholics ^ | October 1, 2012

As a Catholic who works in the trade association profession in the auto industry it was unsettling to hear President Obama claim that he saved the auto industry. President Obama closed over 2,200 auto dealerships, which caused the losses of decades old family-owned businesses and over 120,000 jobs they provided. The closures were allowed to happen under the false notion that auto dealerships were an expense on their auto maker. The President ignored the fact that auto dealers are not an expense to automakers. Auto makers own none of what you see at auto dealerships. Auto dealers own all their property; the cars and trucks, parts, buildings, land, signs, everything. The dealerships pay their employee’s salaries and millions of dollars in taxes to state and local governments. The manufacturer has nothing to do with any of these things.

Facts:

The President’s actions against auto dealers violated the Catholic social teaching principles of social justice and the common good by removing owners rights to their property and defrauding workers of their wages. His actions (he calls it “shared sacrifice”) were an example of collectivism, centralized planning and socialism. All of these ideas are rejected by America and all are rejected by Catholic teaching in regard to the commandment, “thou shall not steal.”

Many people have forgotten what damage President Obama did to the auto industry and the auto dealer and their employees. Please remind them.

Now if Obama’s opponent were a fighter who really wanted to win the election, he’d be bringing this up in the swing states.

Where are you getting that number. I think you need to read some of the latest polls that show Catholics leaning away from Obortion O.

O got 54-45% of the Catholic vote in 2008. So, yes, I was being alarmist for effect.

Can’t convince me he won’t again this time.

Don’t forget to add in the value of the thousands of perfectly good cars deliberaterly destroyed.

Not to mention that many of the jobs "saved" are overseas! Many of the 'American' cars are manufactured on foreign soil. GM outsources almost two thirds of its jobs overseas. Less than one in five GM vehicles are manufactured in the United States. Forbes article

To #5: Those dealerships were owned by AMERICANS, Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and Vegetarians.

120,000 jobs wiped out by The One. I’m praying that this translates into 120,000 more votes to oust our dictator. And if you figure in the voting members of their families, you might reach 250,000 anti-Obama, anti-Democrat votes.

Now that would be a payback!!

Less than one in five GM vehicles are manufactured in the United States. .

If you had a company that was locked into UAW contracts (by the fedgov), you'd be looking to go elsewhere as fast as possible too.

Can anyone explain the Obama rational for the closings or how an independent business is forced to close. I know a dealer product line can be severed; but when sales are the name of the game did they contract the dealer network for the manufacturer?

I’ve never seen anyone study this. At the time there was talk that they targeted conservative/Republican owners.

I do know that Jim Reed Chevrolet in Nashville (been around for over 75 years) lost their affiliation. Or they dumped it. I don’t know.

Ads need to be run on this. So much damage Obama has done, and short memories of (some) voters that need reminding.

Thanks for the correction.

I used to go by both plants when selling forest products in TN. Got ‘em confused.

Glad the Nissan plant at least is still alive and well.

Wrong. Obama will never get 75% of the Catholic vote. Never.

The magic that Spring Hill had is they set the property tax at 0 for everybody. Big Bad GM can’t have that terrible message getting out as far as Obama is concerned.

Saved the US auto industry?@?@

What about Pontiac? What about Saturn? What about Hummer? All names that could have been sold off to private investors.
