Death of an Aunt
lyby ^ | October 17, 2012 | lyby

Posted on 10/17/2012 9:03:37 PM PDT by lyby

I have experienced the death of family members, friends, and acquaintances. Probably the earliest I recall was when I was about four years old.

My grandfather's death in 1982, knocked me down. I was the first granddaughter, and we shared the same birthday for 22 years.

Other family members have since passed on... friends and acquaintances have since died...

Last night my aunt, thirteen years older than I and like an older sister to me, died...

I celebrate her life and the impact she had on my life; however, I cannot stop crying...

She and her husband, who passed on about twenty years ago, took my sister and me camping, taught me how to drive a stick-shift VW, gave me my first razor to shave my legs, visited my husband and me when we moved from VA to Miami...

My husband and I drove from AL to VA a couple of weeks ago to see her. We had been told she had only a couple of months to live... I wanted to see her before she died and had thought when she passed I would not have to attend her funeral.

Now it is time... And I cannot stop crying.

Our daughter and I will leave tomorrow to pay our respects...

Rest in peace and God bless you, Aunt Betty.

You’ve experienced the death of loved ones before and so have I. Some are more personal than others. You and your dear aunt had a very close personal bond. No wonder you are taking it so hard. It is different. You will grieve for a long time. That’s natural. Cry all you want.

This Christmas will be the second one without my dad. I miss him every single day. It is getting easier in the sense that I don’t cry when I think about missing him. I remember his gentle smile and twinkling blue eyes.

God’s blessings to you for a good sleep and courage for a new day. I will say a prayer for comfort for you, lyby. It will get better, tiny bit by bit, in the sense that you can go on without her present in your life here on earth.

In Jesus, you will see her again in life everlasting. Bless you dear!

And all I can write to EACH of you who have replied: Thank you so much for your uplifting words. I KNOW Aunt Betty is in heaven... what a beautiful soul... She told my sister and me that we think too highly of her... We LOVE HER - she shared her life with us and loved us... THAT’S what life is supposed to be, isn’t it? Agape...

Agape love is it my dear. You will see your Aunt Betty again. God has promised with His love through Jesus.

Try to get some good sleep tonight, though I know it will be difficult. Let the exhaustion take over. You will feel better in the morning.

My Mom died suddenly in her sleep. At the funeral home, a woman approached a Christian friend of Mom’s and said she was sorry for the loss. Without skipping a beat, the friend said, “Oh she’s not lost. We know exactly where she is!”

May your thoughts dwell on the wonderful relationship you had with your aunt, and the wonderful reunion you will have some day.

May God bless you and your family. You’ll be in my families prayers.

Over the last 30 years I’ve only cried 3 times and all 3 were hard cries.

1- When Obama won in 2008
2- When Ronald Reagan passed
3- After dropping my daughter off at college this past August.

When my Great Aunt died when I was in my 20's I cried so hard that they nearly had to carry me out of the Church. I belong to a family of stiff lipped Norwegians who don't show very much emotion, so they really wondered about me. Besides me there were just a few sniffles in the Church. When I cried I was not just crying for sadness, but very much also for thankfulness that she had been in my life. My tears were sadness mingled with profound joy.

When I was a girl, so broken by a bad divorce between my parents, and in need of special love, she was there to give me the attention I needed. She and my Great Uncle let me know that they loved me and I spent weeks at their house. I remember her giving us sugar cubes, which back in simpler times was special to children, and I remember her making me ice cream sundaes. I remembered small things that she did, that for a small child really meant big things. In time I got over my grief and now there are joyful memories and a looking forward to seeing her sometime in what will seem just a little while in heaven.

Since then many I love have died and gone on to be with The LORD. I actually spent months crying and grieving for their loss, even though I know I will see them soon. The funny thing is that one day The LORD helped by having me drive by a simple sign in front of a Church that read "Tear not, for I am with you". After reading that sign I felt that The LORD spoke to me through it. He ministered to me and my constant tears were stayed. I still at times grieve for my loved ones that I miss so much, but truly look forward to the day we all will meet again.

Mathew 5:4 Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Must be something about being an Aunt Betty. I had one too. She could not have children due to a heart condition so, I was her child. It was a treat every summer to be able to spend the summer and holidays with her. She taught me how to cook, embroidery, bought me that first razor for shaving my legs, and taught me so many things!

I lost my Aunt Betty many years ago and I still cry when I think of her and her wonderful husband.

Cherish those times you had together and vow to be an Aunt Betty in someone else's life.

Thank you, Bellflower, for sharing your memories and experiences...

Our family shared a lovely funeral service for my Aunt Betty! The chapel was filled with people who cherished her! The tributes were uplifting! - especially the poem my brother-in-law, Buddy Buchanan, read about the ship: we mourn its leaving our sight, but those on the other side of the horizon celebrate its coming!

And to ALL my FR friends, a BIG heartfelt THANK YOU.
