President Barack Obama’s decision to back gay marriage has shaken black churchgoers’ faith in the Democratic Party, Bishop E.W. Jackson told The Daily Caller.

“I am now sensing, hearing, talking to people — for the first time in 40 years, the black community is having a discussion about whether they ought to be Democrats, whether they ought to vote Democrat,” the Virginia minister said. “That’s never happened.”

In May, Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage after years of straddling the fence politically.

“Ministers are being questioned by their members: How can we vote for President Obama?” Jackson said. “I’ve even had some ministers who are on the left frankly, politically saying, We gotta figure out how we quiet everybody. We gotta figure out how we get everybody back in the camp, because they sense that people are awakening and saying, now wait a minute: If I have to choose between Jesus and the Democrat Party, Jesus and Barack Obama, then Jesus is going to be my choice.”

Look for the full interview with Jackson Monday.

Friend this causes me pain and anguish too. Contrary to what people in the Democrat Underground, Daily Kos, Huffington Post think, most conservatives are not hateful bigots. For that matter, I think that most thinking people implicitly believe in the Golden Rule. You treat others as you wish to be treated yourself. I can truly say some of my best friends in this world happened to black (yes, I know that this line is often pilloried as insincere, but it also has the virtue of being true). One my best friends ever was a mulatto, just like our current President. With all these friends I had in the military and before I entered the service, race grievances was always somethings we dealt with an honest way. Sometimes, we would even joked around about it.

Great psychic damage was done to black people in the treatment they received for many years. This is a black mark on our nation’s history and its original sin, as it were. For the last 60 years or so, our country has done the most amazing things to make up for this bad history. Today, everyone in this country has protection under the law and has the freedom to go as far as his or her talent and motivation will take them. No other country can claim such an outstanding achievement for such a large and diverse population.

So it pains me to see blacks vote in such a lock-step manner for people and a party which does nothing but exploit these old wounds. My hope is that once this election is done (hopefully concluding with a new President), blacks and all Americans without respect to ethnicity or color, will come to the realization that this nation sinks or swims together. Voting should be done based on political belief and not tribal instinct.
