Homeschoolers Needed to Man Call Centers for Tight Congressional Races
Vanity | 10/24/12 | 1010RD

There are dozens of very tight, but winnable Congressional elections - both House and Senate. Why not combine your personal interest, our national interest and home schooling by making Get Out The Vote (GOTV) calls with your homeschoolers.

We just took our homeschoolers over to our local Republican Victory Center here in Illinois and made about 300 calls. It is extremely easy. They set you up with a very short script. The kids were nervous, but it's very easy and a well spoken 10 year old can do it easily. Once they get started you just roll along.

This isn't "cold calling", but calling people who have already indicated they're willing to vote for the candidate or Republicans in general. You're just gently reminding them to get out and vote! The script is easy to follow and goes something like this:

Hi, I'm NAME and a volunteer at XXXX for Congress/Senate/Etc. Can XXX count on your vote this November?

We mailed you an absentee ballot. Are you planning to vote by mail? Have you already voted?

It is totally automated and very easy. Let me emphasize EASY!!!

If you don't like calling strangers don't worry. They're very friendly overall and if they don't want to talk they just hang up or say so.

The issue is that these are voters who don't normally show up on election day. They're wanting to vote and have said they'd vote for the GOP candidate, but need a little reminder and motivation.

It's very educational and our families need to know the realpoliticks of American elections. So you get to help conservatives win, help America regain her founding purpose, and you get an education to boot!

Just search for either "Republican Victory Center - your state" or "Romney Victory Center - your state". Contact them and they'll get back to you quickly.

Let's be the ones to gain a conservative victory this fall. I'd like to leave a better America for our kids than the one we got.

There are only 13 days until the election. You can make a difference - do it now!

Best FReegards,

TenTen

Thank you for this. It’s an important point and good not only for our candidates but also for our homeschoolers. Our homeschoolers will be some of the most important foot soldiers in the battle for God’s Truth.

I'm sorry but using young kids to call complete strangers for political messaging just strikes me as wrong. If the libs did this, we'd be all over them for it.

Haven’t had a homeschool ping in a month. I went to check for one to ping even a part of the list, alas I erased all my pings a week ago.

I’m thinking metmom has been busy elsewhere.

Your efforts paid off a little - I just went and signed up.

Didn’t do the mobile phone number though - I don’t have a text plan.

Agreed on kids cold calling, but one good way to get kids involved politically is to take them precinct walking. I’ve done it for several cycles now.

It’s outside, fresh air, and no one has been rude to us yet. I am right there. We call on Republicans only. The kids enjoy it.

Another idea might be working at a campaign HQ, or going to a rally together.

excellent work! Glad to hear it. I only do state house races myself, but the kids are great on the phone.

I’m sorry to not have been clearer. We weren’t cold calling, but calling people who’d already stated they’d vote for our candidate, but were known to not vote. This was encouraging them to get out and vote.

All of them had been mailed an absentee ballot in advance. We were simply doing a follow up call. It was in fact a very positive experience, particularly for young people.

Everything you do in life involves dealing with other people, most often strangers, and learning to do so in a positive way is a real skill. Today’s young adults lack this skill. Furthermore, given the size and scope of government, if young conservatives don’t learn how to win elections and get out the vote how will we ever get our country back? You can’t do it without winning. We didn’t get a bad report from any of the kids. It went very, very well.

That doesn't matter. Young kids should not be used for this purpose, period. Willing teenagers 16 and above, sure, but certainly not 10-year olds, even if the targets of the calls were regarded as friendly. You gotta use some common sense here.

Thanks for keeping up on this. Is she doing OK? Is there a back up in case she needs support?

If you have a private list or a connection to local homeschoolers perhaps you could encourage them to participate. There isn’t much time left and we really need a big win here.

You're just gently reminding them to get out and vote!

Does anybody else detest these phone calls? We haven't missed an election day in 40+ years and Godwilling, we won't miss this year either. I'm not exaggerating when I say we can get up to 15 of them on election day - it feels like harrassment. Stop calling me!!!

I am using common sense. Your disagreement isn’t rational. Each parent can decide for themselves, but for us it was a wonderful experience. I’m not “using” my kids. They have a vested interest in the future.

I don’t know how you were raised, but we were raised to think and act independently, based on God’s principles. That’s always worked. In our home school the goal is mature children. Each of my kids is mature and will eventually be recognized by law as adults. They all grow up don’t they and children are the sum total of their learning and experience.

This experience gave them:

1. a chance to do something that is adult (actually most adults don’t ever bother to do this and only a small minority of FReepers bother to).

2. a chance to practice a skill they’ll need and use throughout life.

3. a chance to influence their future despite the fact that they cannot vote. Decisions get made that will saddle them with debt and limits to their personal liberty. They’ve got a vested interest to participate.

Now, I supposed I could have let them just read about or watch an educational video on how actual elections work. But, my kids have actually done that. They’ve read dozens of books about real on the ground politics. They’re ready and we’re focused on mastery, not infantilization. They went out, did it and did it well. It was a success.

Isn’t that what home schooling is all about? Isn’t raising mature, capable adults the goal?

I’ve got a win/win solution - volunteer at a call center. They’ve got free snacks and drinks. You can work at your leisure and take a break when you want to. They have a big couch and a television.

It’s almost like being at home, except you’re helping to create a conservative majority, reduce government’s size, scope and intrusion in our lives, and restore liberty.

The upside is, if you’re making calls you can’t be called now can you?
