What happened to the price of gasoline during the five-months that the dollar strengthened? It declined dramatically, from $3.72 a gallon to $1.64 (see Part I). And what happened to the price of gasoline after January 2011? It shot past the $3.25 per gallon breaking point, where it remains today."

And in what proportion did the dollar get stronger/weaker? Not by that much. It would have been obvious in the prices of other things too.
