Yes, Happy Reformation Day to you as well. After studying the Scriptures, I am sure glad I chose to be a Calvinist. I know that some others hold to Arminianism but perhaps they just can’t help it.

I am a Catholic. At our Mass this Sunday one of the hymns they played was “Amazing Grace”, a song strongly identified with Protestant denominations.

Use of such music is I think a tacit admission by the Church that the Reformation had a point. You likely would not have heard Amazing Grace played in a Catholic church 50 years ago.

Particularly at Christmas time when they play Away in a Manger (a song which is credited as being written by Martin Luther himself). This would have been verbotten in the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church.

Most Lay Catholics will agree that perhaps our Church’s biggest problem is leadership that, at times, gets quite arrogant and full of itself, and needs to be challenged.

Happy Reformation Day!

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalm 46.

A Mighty Fortress is our God. Circa 1528

Funny. I am a Calvinist(PCA brand) as well. I figure all of us Protestants are semi-Lutheran if only by default.

Thank you for sharing in this thread. I really appreciate it. As a Catholic, have you found more Scripture study and Bible reading in English among your fellow churchmen since Vatican II? One of my dreams is for everyone(Protestants, Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox and everyone else for that matter) to study, read and get to know the Bible in their native tongues which was the dream of Luther and his fellow reformers as well.

Have you ever considered becoming part of a Bible translation team? We have all sorts of job needs here particularly if you are a teacher.

When I was ein younger man I studied canon law; though Erfurt was a challenge it was just to please my pa. Then came the storm, the lightning struck; I called upon Saint Anne: I shaved my head, I took my vows – an Augustinian.

Refrain: Papal bulls, indulgences and transubstantiation: speak your mind against them and face excommunication. Nail your theses to the door, let’s start a reformation, papal bulls, indulgences and transubstantiation.

When Tetzel came near Wittenberg, St Peter’s profits soared, so I wrote a little message for the All Saints’ bulletin board; ‘you cannot purchase merit for we’re justified by grace; here’s ninety-five more reasons, Brother Tetzel, in your face!

Refrain

They loved my tracts, adored my wit; all were ex empleror; the pope, however, hauled me up before the emperor. ‘Are these your books? Will you recant?” King Charles did demand; “I will not change my diet sir, God help me, here I stand.’

Refrain

Duke Frederick took the wise approach, responding to my words by knighting George a hostage in the kingdom of the birds. ‘Use Brother Martin’s model as the languages you seek, stay locked inside the castle with your Hebrew and your Greek.’

Refrain

Now let’s raise our steins and concord books together in this place and spread the word that ‘catholic’ is spelled with lower-case; the word remains unfettered when the Spirit gets a chance, so come on, Katie, drop your lute and join us in our dance.

Refrain
