The increasingly strange case of David Petraeus

What we think we know thus far

Paula Broadwell met Gen. David Petraeus in 2006 and wrote a dissertation about Petraeus' leadership style and subsequently decided to write a book about it in 2008.

Broadwell was granted impressive access to Petraeus and his workings.

The two apparently engaged in an extramarital affair.

Their relationship, which allegedly began in 2011, is said to have ended four months ago.

The affair came to light subsequent to an FBI investigation which included sifting through emails.

Broadwell is said to have had classified intel on her computer both she and Petraeus both deny it came from him.

Jill Kelley is said to have received threatening emails from an account established by Paula Broadwell.

Jill Kelley is a social liaison for the Army and lives in Tampa.

Jill Kelley is said not have been in a relationship with Petraeus.

Kelley is said to have contacted the FBI about the threatening emails.

This is where everything goes off the rails.

The FBI agent contacted by Kelley is said to be a friend of Kelley's- and more.

WASHINGTON—A federal agent who launched the investigation that ultimately led to the resignation of Central Intelligence Agency chief David Petraeus was barred from taking part in the case over the summer due to superiors' concerns that he had become personally involved in the case, according to officials familiar with the probe.

New details about how the Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the case suggest that even as the bureau delved into Mr. Petraeus's personal life, the agency had to address questionable conduct by one of its own—including allegedly sending shirtless photos of himself to a woman involved in the case.

Now the agent's behavior is in question:

FBI officials declined to identify the agent, so he couldn't be reached to give his side of the story. The agent is now under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility, the internal-affairs arm of the FBI, according to two officials familiar with the matter.

The revelations address how the investigation first began and ultimately led to Mr. Petraeus's downfall as director of the CIA. The new developments also raise questions about the role played by the FBI and the adequacy of notification to administration and congressional leaders about the scandal.

The FBI agent who started the case was a friend of Jill Kelley, the Tampa woman who received harassing, anonymous emails that led to the probe, according to officials. Ms. Kelley, a volunteer who organizes social events for military personnel in the Tampa area, complained in May about the emails to a friend who is an FBI agent. That agent referred it to a cyber crimes unit, which opened an investigation.

However, supervisors soon became concerned that the initial agent might have grown obsessed with the matter, and prohibited him from any role in the investigation, according to the officials.

Petraeus gave a briefing on the Benghazi attacks which was entirely off base:

It's Bizarre. I don't know what really happened but I had two reflections right away:
If his name had been Clinton or Kennedy, an affair would not have mattered at all.
What else is going on that this whole debacle is distracting us from? Voter fraud investigations for example?

Kelley is said to have contacted the FBI about the threatening emails.

This is where everything goes off the rails.

Not sure about "off the rails"...that is certainly that point at which the case started the long path to becoming public.

And if getting the case in the public eye wasn't the goal, why would Kelley run the risk of having the FBI investigate her email account when she knew full well she had vast communications with Gen. John Allen lurking there?

Just saying.

This is a three ring circus that Obama has created. Obama is the ring master, these are his people, it’s his administration. Anything that happened is his responsibility. But frankly, I think that it is much ado about nothing. I don’t want to know about the sexual exploits of anyone. I simply don’t care, unless it involves a crime. None of this involved anything illegal, except maybe on the part of the FBI agent who started the whole thing.

The real reason that this circus was created was created at precisely this time was to relegate the Benghazi fiasco to side show status and prevent Petraeus from testifying. Petraeus had just returned from a Middle East fact finding trip and was in the process of writing up a report in preparation for his testimony to Congress. Obama couldn’t let that happen.

FOUR stars and this is the best he could do?

Sort of like I told a vendor once who thought he could offer me a bribe... “You are a damn fool. You would never be able to offer enough for me to sell my integrity and I damn sure wouldn’t sell it to you! Now, get the hell out of my office fast before I throw you out and never come back!” My reputation was sealed at the tender age of 26 and has stayed with me for these last 3 decades.

The world has gone completely mad.

Surely he is humiliated. Hopefully he is ruined.

I feel sorry for his wife. She has soldiered through the whole Army Wife mess for 38 years and has probably earned much better than this.

Voter fraud? You’re joking, right? I mean, Romney is way too nice to investigate the election having possibly been stolen, right? What we REALLY need is an investigation into why 3M McCain voters stayed home this time and let Obama win by 406,000 votes.

I feel sorry for his wife.

I don't. She works for Obama.

It’s a lot worse than that, Jill Kelley is now said to have been in some kind of relationship with the General who is in charge of Afghanistan, now. I think that is what Broadwell’s dad meant when he said that this is part of something a lot bigger. Now, I am wondering just how wide this swing set swung.

For political party that claims to be so pro-woman, the Obama administration and the Democrats have been involved in an incredible amount of sexual misconduct and prostitution. Do Democrats think that affairs and prostitution are pro-woman? There was the Secret Service, Menendez, Weiner, and probably others that I can’t think of off the top of my head.

Also, there was noting threatening in the emails. no reason to open the investigation, except that Kelley was probably worried that someone would expose her relationship with the General who replaced Petraeus in Afghanistan.

So, the only real crime was that the FBI agent used his job to open an investigation as a favor to a personal friend, with whom he may have had an inappropriate relationship.

Heck, it might have been Kelley’s husband who wrote that letter to a newspaper help column about his wife, not Broadwell’s.

What if it turns out that someone high up in the Obama administration blackmailed Petraeus into giving a false briefing on September 14? A briefing that corroborated Obama's fake YouTube scenario for Benghazi? That's where this is headed.

Was Paula Broadwell ever awarded a Ph.D?

I never heard that Petraeus ever corroborated the Obama lie. What Petraeus said was that no one in the CIA ever gave the order to stand down on the request for help.

I think that the request for Petraeus to resign was meant as punishment and the resulting media circus as a distraction as well as being intended to discredit anything in Petraeus’ report on Benghazi.

Frankly, I don’t want to hear anymore about the sexual swing set that was going on. I want to hear about what happened in Benghazi.

From Fox News

Fox News is told that the Petraeus briefing on Sept. 14 conflicted with that of the FBI and NCTC.

On Capitol Hill, Petraeus characterized the attack as more consistent with a flash mob, where the militants showed up spontaneously with RPGs. Petraeus downplayed to lawmakers the skill needed to fire mortars, which also were used in the attack and to some were seen as evidence of significant pre-planning. As Fox News previously reported, four mortars were fired -- two missed the annex, but the mortar team re-calibrated and the next two mortars were direct hits.

Fox News is told that Petraeus seemed wedded to the narrative that the attack was linked to a demonstration and was spontaneous as opposed to pre-meditated.

Newt Gingrich said today (2012-11-13) Tuesday that “people in the meeting” told him that the General said the attack was NOT ABOUT THE VIDEO during the closed-door hearing ... that is was a terrorist attack .....

Because it wasn't actually Kelly who contacted the FBI agent, she was being impersonated by her evil twin.

What we REALLY need is an investigation into why 3M McCain voters stayed home this time and let Obama win by 406,000 votes.

And maybe at the same time, an investigation into voter fraud to decide whether 3M voters really stayed home, or if their votes were simply dropped into the bit bucket.

It does matter if the 406,000 vote advantage was real or not. If those votes weren't real, it would not have mattered how many folks stayed at home or went to the polls, the left would have simply invented more votes.

We know some likely reasons for a low Republican turnout. They ran a liberal, who acted conservative during the primary, and then twisted liberal the last 3 weeks. They absolutely failed at the get-out-the-vote effort. They aren't fighting for any of the local folks who are losing to election fraud. It was suicide.

No great investigations is needed to know that the GOPe failed at even the basics of a campaign. But what we do is only half the story, the left & negative campaigns & voter fraud also play their part.

Though I suspect that political and ulterior motives are driving this episode, I can’t agree that an affair doesn’t matter when a CIA director is involved. It creates vulnerability to blackmail, potentially critical discontinuities in agency management and effectiveness, excuses for counter-espionage investigations for political purposes, potential leaking of secrets by indiscrete lovers, etc. This case shows worse judgement than simple sex with a bimbo; Ms. Broadwell was an intelligent, ambitious player, whose career was enhanced by special access. Perhaps she was enamored, perhaps pretending. Unless there is something very devious at play, Petraeus’s poor judgement let down his team.

Nah, the affair was over. It was no big deal. It could have been if it had continued, but it didn’t and the FBI has said that no breech of security occurred. This affair was past tense.
