Ram named Motor Trend Truck of the Year

The Ram 1500 has been named 2013 Truck of the Year by Motor Trend magazine.

The magazine's editors were impressed by the truck's fuel economy and posh interior.

"The 2013 Ram 1500 SLT is essentially like driving a Chrysler 300 with a bed," says the story that appears in the magazine's February issue. The Ram is made by Chrysler Group, which also makes the 300, a car known for its relatively upscale interior.

Chrysler recently split off the Ram truck division from Dodge, so the trucks no longer carry the Dodge name.

To be eligible for the Truck of the Year award, a model must be completely new or substantially changed for the 2013 model year. Only two other trucks -- the Ford F-150 pickup and Nissan NV 3500 passenger van -- were eligible this year.

When Chrysler Group unveiled the new Ram at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the automaker touted advances in fuel economy, boasting that it had become the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid truck sold in the United States

The V6-powered Ram truck gets 25 miles per gallon on the highway, according to the EPA. Last year's 2012 Dodge Ram V6 was rated at 20 mpg on the highway...

It obviously is the end of the world.....

When Dodge is named truck of the year, there is no reality.

Based on the interiors I saw at their website, I kind of see their point. Very nice. And now Dodge is finally selling an Alfa Romeo as the Dodge Dart.

I have been a mechanic for over 4 decades, worked on thousands of cars and trucks.

Abd Dodge does look nice, the Chrysler cars look nice, but I would buy a full sized Ram p/u and slide a Silverado chassis and electrical system under, the Dodge drive train is weak, the electrical system not much changed over the decades and is a mess.

But I love the look of the new Ram, looks like an old Alco PA diesel locomotive, but truck of the year? Must have been some free drugs at THAT meeting.

I’ll keep my F150. 11 years old, 160k miles, runs like a top. I absolutely refuse to support government motors in any way, shape or form.

Dodge could go away tomorrow and I wouldn’t miss it.

I will never buy a Chrysler or GM product of any kind again in my life. Period. Ever. Never.

Great pickup...if what you really want is a car.

That is absolutely true! They named the all-electric Tesla Model S as Car Of The Year. What a pile of greenies they are.

As opposed to my ‘96 Ram 5.2L V8—one of the last of the 318s—which had 220 hp new. And doesn’t have anywhere near that now. :)

192,000 miles, though, and it’s still running, more or less.

I would agree on the weakness of Dodge drive trains. I’ve been to a few deisel truck pulls in recent years. Fords and Chevys did ok. Seems like every other Dodge truck that pulled broke the drive shaft back at the differential.

Not odd for V-6's these days. My Camry has 268 ponies and will get up to 32 mpg highway (rated 28, but staying at 65-70 gets better mpg). The same size engine in the Maxima is at 300 or so ponies. Today's V-6's outperform many of the legacy V-8's and get good mileage to boot. The biggest problem with a V-6 as a workhorse engine is that the mileage will drop severely when under load (towing, etc.). For workhorse purposes, no 6 is better than a solid straight 6.

Isnt that just a little bit unrealistic?
I use to be a chevy man but I bought a new 3/4 ton 97 powerstroker. It has 230,000 on it and other then two trannys I have been very happy with it.

I always wanted a dodge but I am leary of mechanical issues.

What full sized truck would you buy other then remodling the ram

This is Motor Trend magazine , getting COTY simply means that Chrysler spent the most on advertising this year and the Chrysler execs got to choose which of their products would win.

Chrysler in the last decade is known mainly for interiors that fall apart because the plastics are TOO CHEAP (although they start out pretty) and INCREDIBLY UNRELIABLE transmissions in their RWD cars and trucks.

At first I thought that this was Rahm being named Mayor of the Year or maybe Motor-Mouth of the Year! Just me and my myopia.
