My response on the thread about that was "I own an 'assault rifle' to keep anyone from confiscating my other guns." Facetious but essentially true. More basically the reason to own one is to defend against multiple assailants. And then there is the fun of shooting one.

I'm an old fart and can't run away from danger or hide as quickly as I used to, so may need to get myself some better defensive weaponry.

Thanks for the ping. I shot the M-16 during my almost 40 years in the military. Those are fun to shoot in the "rock and roll" (full auto) mode. You can empty the magazine in seconds, but that is expensive. Now an M2 or M60 machine gun using tracers is really fun. Personally, I like to shoot one round at a time and make sure it hits the target.
The bad people will not turn in their guns regardless of the laws. Hell most have criminal records and just by possessing a firearm they are breaking the law.
