What about with a well-placed, well-hidden camera hooked to his computer, so he could watch the safe being opened? Record the vid, zoom, etc.?

Safecracking does take intellect. A genius kid could very well get into a safe. Perhaps he simply rigged a hidden camera and got the code as his unsuspecting mother opened the safe.
