In Pursuit of Recognition: An Undocumented Immigrant's Resilient Fight
NPR ^ | December 25, 2012 | Mandalit del Barco

Posted on 12/25/2012 1:29:25 PM PST by moonshinner_09

Unlike many undocumented immigrants, Sofia Campos is not afraid to give her real name.

"It's deliberate, and it's liberating," she says. "It's kind of a shock to hear somebody say, 'I am undocumented' or wear the 'I am undocumented' T-shirt, just in your face."

The 22-year-old is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, and heads United We Dream — a national network of youth-led immigrant organizations. She's part of an outspoken generation of activists who've lobbied lawmakers, Democrats and Republicans alike, for changes in immigration policy.

This year, their movement scored a victory with President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows undocumented students to avoid deportation and obtain a work permit for two years. Despite its significance, Sofia and other students say it's just one step in their fight for legal status.

She also acknowledges the critics of the program who think undocumented people are undeserving of the help.

"That hateful language, you know, like 'illegal, alien, wetback, leach,'" she says, recalling opponents. "People were talking about my brother, my sister, my mom, my dad. How can these people, who don't know me at all, who don't know the love that exists within my family, how can you be just so hateful?"

Sofia says that hate is a powerful reason for undocumented youth to speak out and share their stories.

Her story began in Lima, Peru, where she was born. In the aftermath of the Shining Path terrorism, her parents moved the family to California in 1996.

An Undocumented ILLEGAL Immigrant's Resilient Fight to infiltrate a country where she's not welcome, where she has no legal right to be, and where she arrogantly thinks to change the culture to fit her ideas rather than the opposite.

Yeah, she was so afraid of this that on her 18th birthday she went down to immigration and filled out all the appropriate paperwork, right? Oh, never mind.

The media are being inundated with these stories.. I hope taxpayers are not being billed to pay the PR firms.. though in this case taxpayers are paying and NPR is the PR firm.

“Then she had to come up with the money herself — as much as $5,000 every 10 weeks — by waitressing, transcribing for grad students, participating in campus surveys”

Made easier because she wasn’t paying income tax like legal US citizens.

“It took her five years, but Sofia graduated with a double major in international developmental studies and political science.”

Yet she is apparently too STUPID to study for and pass the US Citizenship test.

You nailed it man. Reading this kind of crap is nothing more than a declaration of war as far as I’m concerned. These parasites are all about themselves and it’s ‘’pay up you racist gringo’’.

So if Barry and his commie ‘RATS pass a bunch of unconstitutional gun laws and gun owners just blow them off, they’ll be “undocumented” gun owners and it will be no big deal, right? Heroes in the eyes of the leftist “media”? I won’t hold my breath.

Sad part is that people supposedly on “our” side like Sean Hannity and Marco Rubio support what this gal is doing

Illegal Alien Amnesty is Anti-American Bigotry

Sofia should go home to where she cam from. If she wishes to re-enter let her apply for a visa like everyone else.

Let her go home with her toilet paper degrees. They are nothing but agitators credentials...Too bad she can’t become a lawyer because she has committed multiple felonies.

An unacknowledged characteristic of these people is that stealing someone else’s birthright is decent and an acceptable societal action. This girl/lady if she had any moral conscience would now take her ill-gotten benefit from the USA citizens back to her birth country and rectify conditions there. She is nothing but a socital thief in this Nation.

I agree with this comment by Alone In_A_Crowd
Unfortunately the people who want an amnesty for illegals have not connected all the dots.

It may feel good to allow an unlimited number of people to come here and stay. However the total economic life cycle costs of immigration are incredibly high. Initially immigrants may work hard, and for less, than native-born Americans. However, they get old, and they have children, who work no harder than other Americans - and in fact are more likely to use welfare and have children out of wedlock.

In the process, they contribute to an oversupply of labor, which impoverishes the native born poor - typically poor African Americans and our existing Hispanic population. This creates more welfare dependency and crime.

Of course, there are the environmental costs of immigration. I would challenge those people who support an amnesty for illegals, to do an environmental impact study on the consequences. An honest analysis would reveal increased urban sprawl, decreased habitat, depleted resources, and increased emission of climate change gasses. With startlingly bad local and global consequences.

Sending people back to places where the came from is not a death sentence for them. The life expectancy in Peru is 74 years, Mexico 76 years, vs. the US average of 77 years. Sofia, in the story, might do very well where she came from. Sending people back to their country of origin might give people in those countries an idea that they have to deal with their own issues, can't continue to reproduce irresponsibly, and can't continue to export their problems.

It might even give OUR children a better chance of living in a less poor, uncrowded, and less spoiled land. How about that for their Christmas present !

I would add that illegal immigrants have treated Americans with the utmost in disrespect. They've violated our laws, used what we and our ancestors built, then DEMAND we treat them better than those who follow the rules. They and their forefathers turned their countries into third world cesspools and will not stop until ours is the same. I don't care how heart wrenching their story may be, they have taken money from hard working Americans to live their DREAM. It very likely cost the taxpayers one hundred thousand to educate this girl and all she can do is demand more. No, thank you, just given me more. They should be shamed by Americans at every opportunity, not held up as heroes.

One thing I'd like to say to all those employers who aided and abetted illegal immigrants by employing them, and in some cases helping them come here. I hope you like your tax increase they and their fellow Hispanics helped give you.

With 71% of Hispanics voting for Obama, it should be very clear to everyone that we have to STOP immigration from Latin America. Latin Americans have unfairly increased their numbers here pushing out immigrants from other countries.
