In quick succession Friday, the Camden City Council and the state Department of Community Affairs approved a plan to lay off all of the city's uniformed police officers, paving the way for a new county-run force to replace Camden's 141-year-old Police Department. The approvals were given after the state Civil Service Commission last week gave the green light to the mass layoffs, set for April 30. Notices are expected to go out soon to about 260 officers. City police unions have vowed to fight the layoffs in court.
An attorney for one of the unions alleged that the commission had been swayed by erroneous information the city submitted about its financial condition and the history of negotiations over a new contract.
Critics of the plan call it a union-busting maneuver; city and county officials say the county-run force would operate less expensively and would put more officers on the streets of a city that last year had a record 67 homicides...

as of today, less than 200 applied to be on the new force..
My buddy (potential candidate) turned down the offer to apply...What does that tell ya???
Hey!
Isn’t this going to make BO’s police state a little ineffective?
And then ban guns there.
Women, children and donut shops hardest hit.
This is just some kind of brinksmanship in the negotiations. It’ll never really happen, just like the fiscal cliff. Maybe 10 or 20 Police officers lose their jobs at most.
I’ve never known why the duplication of Sheriff’s Department, Police Department, Constable’s Office, etc. are needed. There is duplication of effort and services, higher costs and poor coordination all as a result.
The two police forces will coexist until the new department is determined to be functioning safely, ....How the Hell could you tell? “The murder rate only went up 5% since the new department started”?
Ive never known why the duplication of Sheriffs Department, Police Department, Constables Office, etc. are needed....In most states, each entity has different duties. The SO is part of the judicial branch, Police are executive branch and Constables are judicial branch. Constables are also part of the Legislative branch inasmuch as in MANY places they are elected, individually. (By the way, did you know in a lot of States the County Coroner is the HMFIC of authority for law enforcement?)
Easy, Sheriff’s require the confidence and a VOTE by the People to keep their Jobs, Police are hired by local government from outside the community in order to effectively impose tyranny upon the citizenry with no recourse whatsoever. Which is why you should be required as a matter of law to actually live within the boundaries of the city which hired you.
In Los Angeles there are roughly 10,000 City Police Officers, over 6,000 live in VENTURA COUNTY, and the rest live at least 30 miles away in Santa Clarita. They are by definition : “ Agents of Tyranny”
