GOP congressman threatens impeachment if Obama uses executive action for gun control

Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman threatened Monday afternoon that he would file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he institutes gun control measures with an executive order.

Stockman warned that such executive orders would be “unconstitutional” and “infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.”

“I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment,” Stockman said in a statement.

At his press conference Monday, Obama floated the possibility of using executive action to enact policies aimed at reducing gun violence.

The freshman congressman, who served one term in Congress in the mid-1990s, further labeled the possibility “an existential threat to this nation” because, he said, the purpose of the Second Amendment is to allow the people to protect themselves from tyranny.

“Any proposal to abuse executive power and infringe upon gun rights must be repelled with the stiffest legislative force possible,” he added. “Under no circumstances whatsoever may the government take any action that disarms any peaceable person — much less without due process through an executive declaration without a vote of Congress or a ruling of a court.”

He concluded by claiming that an executive order would be not just “not just an attack on the Constitution,” but also an “attack on Americans.”

“If the president is allowed to suspend constitutional rights on his own personal whims, our free republic has effectively ceased to exist,” he said.

Steve Stockman is absolutely serious about this and many other things. He will do what he says. Stockman is not a wimp.

I completely agree. The Constitution is our contract with the federal government. When that constitution, especially the BILL OF RIGHTS is broken. It is finished. The contract is null.

Obama is blowing smoke. The “Executive Orders” he’s talking about are ‘research’, ‘better’ enforcement of existing laws, and similar nothingburgers.

Obama and the Dems know they can’t get a real gun-control bill through congress. These Executive Orders are meaningless face-saving measures, and the sudden interest in amnesty is the next attention shifter so they can keep moving. Obama has been told he’s already lost this battle.

It would be great if he got impeached though, I’ll get my popcorn.

And which you’re at it Stockman please propose the Exexutive Privilege Abuse Act of 2013 to stop future tyrants and include the phrase, “any abuse of this act that results in the loss of freedoms of the American people, its citizens, or detainees and/or changes in the Constitution will result in the immediate impeachment, removal of the current president, vice president, and speaker of the house from their positions and charged with treason in it’s highest degree resulting in executions to proceed within a 24 hour period”....lol

Yes, the Civil War was about slavery, but it consolidated federal power to an unconstitutional degree over the states, and according to some, slavery was on it’s way to being abolished anyway. I have no idea if that’s true or not, but while I’m glad slavery (at least the explicit form) is over, I know I’m not happy with the legacy of federal overreach.

This would be purely symbolic. Unless there is a tsunami in the mid-term, Obama is not being impeached. I do support the idea of defunding the entire regime. Place a total economic blockade around these leeches. Of course, Obama will use executive order until eventually there will be no point in having a congress. At that point, when even the media cannot hide that Obama has become a dictator, he might be in trouble. Obama’s agenda is now crystal clear. All Republicans should oppose ANYTHING this man tries. No nicotine summits. No negotiation.

So do I. Wholeheartedly. Long overdue. Someone, in fact all of us, need to let this ‘constitutional scholar’ know that he doesn’t know his a$$ from a popgun on the Bill of Rights or the limits of his office.

The president can regulate the sale of a (1934 Dif rifle), (1934 DIF shotgun) and noise suppressors. As to the machine gun, all these are registered and taxed per law. His regulate extends to collection of a specific amount of tax and keeping a list. Anything else that he attempts would be outside the law.

Exactly. Republicans control the House and there are too many Rat Senators from red states to count on.

Time to change the subject to the debt ceiling and immigration.

Lincoln suspended the right of Habeas corpus For those who voiced opposition to his policies. He also stacked the supreme court by increasing the number of setting justices in order to have his orders affirmed.

"Steve Stockman is absolutely serious about this and many other things. He will do what he says. Stockman is not a wimp."

He doesn't need impeachment. He simply has to ensure that the Twentieth Amendment, Section Three is ENFORCED. BTW, He took an oath to enforce it. He can do it tomorrow. That's the day it is enforced. Otherwise, he's just another traitor like all the rest.

How far will it get with a Senate lead by Democrats that won’t even pass a budget? Starting the process is one thing, but actually having it work is a horse of another color.

That said, it would be so nice to see.

In my opinion, the Civil War was about states’ rights, which was brought to a head by the issue of slavery. I agree that it was probably on its way out, as the fight over new territory was to replace depleted soil from tobacco, as well as other political reasons. The leadership of the tobacco crops was sooner or later to fail. It may have taken a long time for slavery to die on the vine.
