nothing on tv so I dropped the TV package to the lowest level and added Encore Westerns. Several programs and movies per week worth watching....Yakima Canutt- Yippee yo ki yea!!

I remember reading that Howard Hawks after directing John Wayne in “Red River” said it was the first time he realized the big guy was a good actor.

The impression I get...is that everyone associated with Red River was shocked at how well it was received, and even more shocked that it became a top ten western classic.

If you wrote up a list of the best twenty-five westerns ever made...John Wayne ends up being in twelve of them.

My father saw Red River dozens of times. He joked that he saw the movie so often, he knew the cattle drive route off by heart. Obviously, Red River was one of Dad’s favorite westerns. Then again, he would watch a movie of John Wayne gargling if there was such a film. He was that much of a fan of the Duke.

I remember Wayne said “Red River” was the best movie he ever made. I personally liked “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” best.

If you notice in the classic picture of Wayne holding a model 92 Winchester, his belt buckle has the red river “D” brand on it. I have read that was his personal brand on his ranch.

Some of Wayne’s “Three Mesquiteers” b-westerns from Republic (circa 1938-39) have just recently come out on dvd and blu-ray. Beautifully re-mastered, they look absolutely stunning, with sharp prints and marvelous contrasts.

Any time a person achieves that level of stature, memorabilia and replicas surrounding his persona command hefty values. In 1948, United Artists released Red River, the story of visionary rancher Tom Dunson (Wayne) and his creation of a cattle empire from the early days of the settling of the west to later years when his ruthless individualistic values clash with those of his adopted son, played by Montgomery Clift. John Ford’s Stagecoach had established Wayne as a star in 1939. Ford’s viewing of Red River prompted him to say of Wayne, “I didn’t know the big s.o.b. could act.” John Wayne, the actor, was born. In Red River the cattle brand for Wayne’s ranch is a D with two wavy lines representing the banks of the river. Howard Hawks the director of Red River had silver belt buckles with a twisted silver wire rope edge, a D and two wavy lines in solid gold, the words “Red River” in gold wire and various initials and the date 1946 in cut gold made up as gifts for some of the cast and crew. These buckles have been known since as the Red River D belt buckles. John Wayne wore a Red River D belt buckle in a number of his later westerns including Rio Bravo, El Dorado and Rio Lobo, all directed by Howard Hawks. I do not know about the D brand. But I do know that John Wayne was a partner in the Red River Cattle Company just west of Stanfield, Arizona. Red River Cattle Company is still there and there is one $hithouse load of cattle there. Funny, I thought the Red River Brand was two s shaped lines that resembled a river.

I think it had both the two wavy lines and the “D”.

The wavy lines were “Red River” and the D was for “Dunston”.
