Cornyn draws primary challenger
The Daily Caller ^ | 2/22/13 | Alexis Levinson

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the second-highest Republican member of the Senate, has drawn a 2014 primary challenger.

Erick Wyatt of Rockport, Texas filed papers this week with the Federal Election Commission to run for Senate against Cornyn, the Senate Minority Whip, who is up for re-election in 2014.

Cornyn is seen as vulnerable to a challenge from the right, and has said he’s been expecting and preparing for a primary battle. He was one of just three senators who voted against John Kerry’s confirmation as Secretary of State. He cast the vote with Texas’ junior senator, tea party favorite Ted Cruz, leading the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to accuse him of being in “Cruz control” in an attempt to gird himself against a primary.

Ads by GoogleWyatt describes himself as more conservative than Cornyn, and an “ally” of the tea party. But asked why he’s running, in a phone interview with The Daily Caller, Wyatt’s first answer is that “Not enough is being done for our veterans.” Wyatt served in the Army for 10 years and the Coast Guard for four years. He was injured in Iraq in 2007. In 2012, he received temporary disability retirement.

“I’m a very big constitutional conservative and believe we have our God given rights,” he said.

“I’m tired of them getting stomped on … I fought for the constitution and I fought for America and I’m not gonna let them get trampled if I can do anything about it,” he went on.

The most moderate members of the republican caucus in the senate up for re-election in 2014 need to be replaced: Chambliss, Collins, Enzi, Cochrane, Graham, Alexander, and the two leaders, Cornyn and McConnell.

Chambliss' talk of supporting tax increases inspired challengers and he decided to retire. Also, Mike Johanns, a more moderate member is also retiring. I've heard rumblings of both Cochrane and Enzi retiring and we should encourage them to do so. Collins would not survive a primary challenge. Graham is trying to shore up his conservative credentials by being all tough lately and McConnell is under threat of being weakened or defeated from both sides.

Thus, I'm heartened to learn that Cornyn is also being challenged. Mr. support Specter over Toomey, and Crist over Rubio needs to go. Removing both Cornyn and McConnell would guarantee new leadership for the republicans in the senate. McConnell especially has undermined conservatives in both bodies time and again.

The pressure on moderates needs to continue, one so that they vote consevatively in the senate to try to shore up their base, and two, to encourage prospective conservatives to challenge them due to their weakness. The RNC, the NRSC and the democrat party will work incessantly to protect moderates in the senate. We must remove them in the primaries. Senators such as DeMint, now Scott, Lee, Paul, Johnson, Rubio, Fischer, and Cruz are worth the battles!

I never had a big problem with Cornyn, as he usually voted the right way on most issues. But then you compare him to what we could have, as in Ted Cruz, and it’s night and day.

So I say, let’s dump Cornyn and replace him with a Ted Cruz clone.

"My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate,” wrote Cornyn to Pennsylvania Republicans. “I can’t do that without Arlen Specter. With him as our nominee, I can target our campaign resources toward beating Democrats and growing the Senate Republican Conference.”

Cornyn’s voting record has always been solidly consevative, nothing to argue with there.

A reason to keep Cornyn is he is pretty senior and in a position to affect things for Texas versus other states.

I with with Ted Cruz and Cornyn we hvae a pretty good team.
But i will be anxious to see what this Wyatt guy has to say and offer

The Forbes article As Country Club Republicans Link Up With The Democratic Ruling Class, Millions Of Voters Are Orphaned is especially relevant.

The GOP is not "the Stupid Party". It is "The Corrupt Party". The GOP leadership's perceived job is to maintain the pretense of there being opposition to socialism, while not seriously opposing it. This way, Repub pols get the perks and benefits of office, while not getting much heat.

We need to replace the corrupt elites with people who are actually willing to fight for conservatism.

His support for Specter, Crist will never be forgotten by me.I have sent him several emails about his decision to support them and never heard anything from him. We need to make a point of bringing this out at primary time!

Not to mention that Specter and Crist both then became democrats, what they were all along.
