Dr. Ben Carson: Your right to own a semiautomatic should depend on where you live

Via the Right Scoop and Mediaite, a point of divergence from conservative orthodoxy by CPAC’s newest scheduled speaker. The urban/rural distinction was actually a key part of Breyer’s dissent in the Heller case five years ago that established an individual right to bear arms under the Second Amendment:

[H]andguns are not only popular tools for crime, but popular objects of it as well: the FBI received on average over 274,000 reports of stolen guns for each year between 1985 and 1994, and almost 60% of stolen guns are handguns… Department of Justice studies have concluded that stolen handguns in particular are an important source of weapons for both adult and juvenile offenders. Ibid.

Statistics further suggest that urban areas, such as the District, have different experiences with gun-related death, injury, and crime, than do less densely populated rural areas. A disproportionate amount of violent and property crimes occur in urban areas, and urban criminals are more likely than other offenders to use a firearm during the commission of a violent crime… Homicide appears to be a much greater issue in urban areas; from 1985 to 1993, for example, “half of all homicides occurred in 63 cities with 16% of the nation’s population.”… One study concluded that although the overall rate of gun death between 1989 and 1999 was roughly the same in urban than rural areas, the urban homicide rate was three times as high; even after adjusting for other variables, it was still twice as high… And a study of firearm injuries to children and adolescents in Pennsylvania between 1987 and 2000 showed an injury rate in urban counties 10 times higher than in nonurban counties…

Finally, the linkage of handguns to firearms deaths and injuries appears to be much stronger in urban than in rural areas...

"Let’s give him some time before we castigate him."

Or maybe we should give him some time before we anoint him, as has been the case with some conservatives lately. We need to learn to vet these people.

Dr. Carson, you have the right to sacrifice your life and freedom any way you want. You do not have the right to sacrifice my life or that of my family. In 1964 I swore an oath to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic and to support the Constitution of the United States. That oath still binds me against misguided tools of tyrants like you — an ally of DOMESTIC enemies.

“Dr. Carson is just like the others (Christie and Brown come immediately to mind) that certain Freepers are so anxious to support in the beginning, without knowing a lot about them.”

I agree. I don’t understand the need for cult-of-personality on the “conservative” side. But it’s there. There were brainless Bushbots all over FR in the early days of his presidency.

You saw it in the Christie cultists also (Ann Coulter, I’m looking at you)...

Remember “Arnold for President””Colon Powell for President””Condi for President,” all that mindless idiocy.

Try to form an intelligent thought, people.

I have an idea. Let’s vet these candidates. It could keep you from looking like a complete imbecile later.

If you listen to Glen Beck’s video interview with him you’ll understand what he’s saying is true. There are some people (psychopaths, schizo’s, et al) who shouldn’t have access to guns.

Compare his belligerent boy actions betwixt a pediatric brain surgeon! Why doesn't the msm ever call him on his adolescent behavior?

What Dr. Carson says has merit, but given the highly poisoned political climate, do you want government bureaucrats making life and death decisions about you?

It's already happening to vets in the VA system. Do you trust your personal medical records to Obama’s people? And, show me where some silly law in a book somewhere, that has actually prevented a crazy from getting a weapon to do nefarious deeds.

The largest mass murder [45 KIA, 58 WIA] in U.S. history was not done by a crazed gunman; it was done by Andrew P. Kehoe who used dynamite and flammable liquid. His reasons were (1) revenge for a defeat in the local elections and (2) personal (sick wife) and financial difficulties (farm in foreclosure). He blew up the Bath Consolidated School in Clinton County, MI. Kehoe had murdered his wife and burned his farm before attacking the school. As responders were attempting rescue of survivors and put out fires, Kehoe detonated his truck loaded with explosives at the site of his first attack. Who is the most thoroughly vetted potential candidate out there? Who has had the MSM digging through their every communication? Who has beaten down numerous bogus accusations of ethical offenses? Who has stood up to all the left has been able to throw? Who was largely responsible for the House gains in 2010? Who has actual executive experience running a large and diverse state?

Come on, people. This is not brain surgery. You know who I’m talking about.
