Wendy’s might close up to 130 restaurants

As Wendy’s Co. continues its effort to modernize restaurants, up to 130 U.S. restaurants could be closed in the coming year because they are not making enough money to be worthy of being remodeled or rebuilt.

The news came yesterday as the Dublin-based company announced earnings for the fourth quarter and full year.

Wendy’s is beginning the third year of its Image Activation program to raze, rebuild or remodel nearly half of its 600 company-owned stores by the end of 2015.

So far, the Dublin-based fast-food restaurant has rebuilt 58 company-owned stores since 2011, and it plans to rebuild or remodel another 100 company stores and 100 franchised stores this year.

The first year, the rebuilt stores “drove average sales increases of 25 percent, and those results continue to hold today,” Emil Brolick, the company’s chairman and CEO, told securities analysts during a conference call....

my 85 year old dad and I go out of our way for Wendy’s chili.. but they screwed up not using the original bun instead of those big doughy, butter flavored kaiser hamburger buns on their Big and Juicys.. IMHO it ruined the Dave Thomas original old fashioned style hamburger/cheeseburger..

can you image the outrage if White Castle started upscaling their rolls into some kind of Kaiser roll?.. they’d go out of business..

I no longer buy Wendy’s hamburgers because the original hamburger Dave Thomas invented with the perfect bun doesn’t exist anymore

The Wendy's in Nicevklle Florida would screw up my order abojut a third of gthe time I went there. I quit going for several years and tried it again about a month ago. I ordered a double with nothing on it but mustard and got one with cheese.

Earlier this year, we stopped at the one in Greenville, Alabama and it was the dirtiest Wendy's I have ever visited.

things like that are a bit like “loss leaders” (no markup but get the people in the store). you get someone in to buy the thing that costs $1 with little markup margin, but then they buy the fries and the drink, high-margin money makers. Place looks busy, more people go there. win-win.
My husband likes Wendy’s. The one’s we’ve eaten at have been pretty good luckily. We discovered Steak n Shake here in FL and they are amazingly good, real old-fashioned ice cream milk shakes too. Also the Checkers here is awesome. so good we actually avoid it so we don’t get too fat lol.

I went to Wendy’s twice in 2006. The second time, the service was so bad that I haven’t gone back since. My guess is that the quality of the food and service wouldn’t have slipped if Dave Thomas was still running the show.

You are correct on the price rise on ff. Just Mon am I headed for Ck Fila when and as I was getting close I recalled a Denny's very near, and thought, wth, I might as well go to Denny's since it wont be much more expensive. And besides, I havent seen Madge in 7 years, or more. I thoroughly enjoyed it too; the ultimate skillet served on the double was the goods and the coffee top notch. Did some freepin and mingled with folks who apparently all knew each other...

So a company that has items as low as one dollar can't make it in this economy? But I was told repeatedly that "Happy Days Are Here Again" by the fool box.

I've never seen more empty storefronts in my life. I imagine all the heartache and broken dreams these failed businesses represent.

There are two exceptions to that, the nation’s capitol and the surrounding area, because of our tax money pouring in, and Texas, because of the free economy. We just moved from Biloxi, Mississippi to Denton, Texas last year and it’s like night and day!!

We now have several jack in the box locations in Johnson County. I remember back in 1990 White Castle had to be in a beige building in Overland Park.

Ditto. But both my wife and I got instant tummy aches after eating the damned things. Tummy aches that lasted a LONG time! Never again!

We do still love the chilli though.
