Gold is investment. Silver is money. It’s all whatever you can get (barter) beyond there.

Agree. Cash would probably only be good in the areas where POS terminals had some capability, assuming the EMP did not wipe out major systems in the entire country. Things would probably go to barter and theft very quickly.

But some cash on hand IMMEDIATELY after the event (most people will likely have no means of knowing what shut everything down) might assist in survival. All the non-cash systems will be gone for a long, long time. Very scary stuff. In 100 years we've gone from a society and infrastructure where EMP would have almost no effect to a situation where we would be devastated by such an event. Most electrical power would probably be gone for a decade. Maybe cash or a newly issued script would come back into use by the survivors at some point to replace the "new gold", i.e. .22 LR.

When the SHTF my action plan is to go buy as much canned food and bulk grains as I can get in my car (assuming it still runs) and pay for it by credit card or bank check if the merchant still accepts them, and then pay in cash until my stash runs out, and then use junk silver until that is gone, and then start swapping for stuff I need with stuff that will shortly be worthless (flat panel TVs etc) and then it won’t make any difference. The people who don’t have canned food and bulk grains will trade anything you need for whatever you have left of the original purchase. P.S. be sure to first hide your gun and ammunition from the gun control crazies because you are going to need them eventually.

I always have ones, quarters, and nickles in the house. That’s so I have a way to pay for things if a hurricane takes out power for a time. I added more some time ago in case TSHF but kept the same denominations.

Those nickles are worth more than a nickel. Avoid spending them-eventually they’ll provide a nice return on investment.

I’m aware the nickel is worth more than a nickel. That is one more bargaining item when buying. “Give me a lesser price and I’ll add a nickel.”

And every branch of our gov’t and most big corporations are pushing for a cashless society here.

I'd guess that the vast majority of American wallets don't contain more than $20 in cash.

I have to confess I am rather dependent on the “please-machine-money” card for almost everything. It’s a tough convenience habit to break.

I have several thousands in twenties squirreled away in various locations, just in case. But I don't touch it and forget it's there, until needed. Yes, PMMs (cute!) are convenient.
