Tech Help Needed - down arrow
Self | 4/4/13

Posted on 04/04/2013 5:48:54 AM PDT by pabianice

I run Windows XP. For some reason, the down arrow/function is malfunctioning. If I press it, instead of simply moving the text down a line it drops to the bottom of the page/screen. How can I reset it to just drop a line at a time?

Thanks.

Check to see if “Sticky Keys” is enabled.

Depends on what app you’re using. Is there a chance a Control (Ctrl), shift, or Alt key is stuck down too?

You may have switched on caret browsing.

You can press press F7 (on Mac: fn + F7) to toggle caret browsing on/off.

Actually, a wireless keyboard might be part of the problem. Wireless keyboards are notorious for acting up when the batteries are low or the keyboard is just old. I went back to a wired keyboard years ago and have no regrets.

That being said, this sounds like a program-specific function. Is this happening in a specific program, pabianice, or is this in any application on your machine?

You’ve been hit by the Obama Virus. It causes the arrow key to go down all the way. No cure until 2016. Too bad......

A nice new keyboard costs around $15, no? (Not saying that’s your problem’s source, but take a good close look between the keys and tell me you don’t want a new keyboard.)

Does it only do that in a specific program or in all programs?

I used to have problems like that with older versions of Firefox on a laptop.

Try rebooting the computer. That usually cures the issue.

Turn your keyboard upside down and whack it against the table a few times.

A problem with your keyboard is the likely cause...replacements are relatively cheap. Do check the batteries in your wireless mouse ..I have seen some pretty weird things happen when they get low. Try running CCleaner to clean out your registry... I have used this program for years and it has been a fix for a lot of issues. Lastly Windows XP is soon no longer supported by Microsoft. I recently moved to Windows 7 on my desk top. You might need to up your RAM and processor... I replaced my mother board, processor and added 4GB of RAM for about $200. Avoid Windows 8..too many issues.

I fixed mine with a sledgehammer. But I had to replace shortly there afterwards.
