Long Guns Recently Turned In at Phoenix event in May, 2013
Cleveland,Ohio, will be hosting a gun turn in event on 15 June, 2013. While these events are commonly labeled with the propaganda term "buyback" the guns were never owned by the people attempting to buy them.
The event will be held at Public Safety Central located at 2001 Payne Avenue, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Gift cards of $100 will be given to those who turn in a handgun, $200 will be given to those who turn in semi-automatic Assault Rifles (no definition given). No gift cards will be given to those turning in ordinary rifles and shotguns, but they will be entered into a raffle for the chance to receive $1,000.
As only the chance at a raffle is being offered for ordinary long guns, a cash offer might be welcome. Many of the long guns turned in at these events are valuable items.
Across the country, communities, police departments and churches are sponsoring gun turn-ins to get "guns off the street". At many of these events, private buyers are showing up, offering cash for the more valuable guns. These private additions to the public turn-in are effective, no doubt, in getting more guns off the street, because they add to the resources that are available to those who want to get rid of guns for something of value, be it a grocery card or a number of twenty dollar bills.
You can help make the turn-in in your area more effective by standing on the curve with your "Cash for Guns" sign, or at a folding table, willing to offer more than the gift card for firearms that are more valuable. It would be best if numerous private parties were available, as more good guns could then be transferred into responsible hands.
This action serves many useful purposes. It stretches the turn-in budget so that more guns can be taken off the street. It helps keep fearful widows from being defrauded of most of the market value of the gun they are turning in. It prevents valuable assets from being destroyed by bureaucratic inflexibility. It is a win-win-win situation.
It also dispels the pernicious message that guns are bad and should be destroyed.

I’ve wondered why gun clubs and even individuals don’t run their own “turn in” program, where a fixed amount would be paid for each gun and instead of being destroyed, guns collected would be sold for that amount plus a nominal handling charge, to responsible qualified new owners. A premium could be charged to more desirable guns to offset those that are less desirable, but the idea would be to get them into responsible hands, rather than “off the street”, which is liberal code for “into the crusher”.
Interesting - I’m fixin’ to be up in Cleveland right in that time frame. I wonder if I ought to bring some extra cash and hang around 2001 Payne Avenue for a couple of hours.
Rough neighborhood nearby, but with all the guns around (including my own), I doubt there’d be much trouble. Might be able to score a nice piece or two for a good price.
1. Support of the local government and police force. This lends credibility to the program and sooths the nerves of the fearful who want to be sure they will not be arrested, because they do not know the law.
2. Support of the local media. This provides valuable free advertising for the program.
3. Source of money to provide incentive to turn in the guns. Can be a private donor, some governments use their own money, and lately, in what is likely an illegal use of forfeiture money, police forfeiture funds allocated for informants has been used for these events.
I`ll check the area out, where in Ohio do you live? I live in Portage County, maybe we can go there together.
I would make sure to have recording devices so you can document any attempts at civil rights violations.

Anybody want to raise funds to rescue the best items? I’d be happy throw in $100-200. If we could get some Ohio FReepers go to the “Turn-in” they could take a commission and rescue some of the good stuff from the hoplophobes. The we divvy up the loot!
Correction: Governments do not have their “own” money. It all comes from taxpayers.
That is why I suggested an Ohio FReeper. I guess I need to change that to an Ohio FFL holder? When it came to divvying up the loot, I’d be willing kick in extra for the FFL transfer, I guess.
