This is sort of misleading as some of the athletic departments are actually self-sustaining and profitable. Those coaches are paid from within that budget.
While they are state employees, the taxpayers aren’t paying their salaries except when they buy tickets.
No wonder the parents of the Pop Warner teams in my area put so much time, effort, and money into their kids playing football.
For years the highest paid state official was the director of the state mental hospital in Jamestown, ND. At that time the University of North Dakota medical school was only a two year program (after two years med students by agreement transferred to four year schools for the remaining two years).
Once the medical school went to a four year program the dean became the highest paid state employees. As I recall the governor was not even in the top twenty.
Exactly correct. Whatever the merits of professional sports under the guise of state institutions, money paid to coaches does not take away from the money available for other government uses.
I am under the impression that highest paid state non-athletic employees are typically medical related.
Yeah, I don’t have any problem with highly-paid college coaches anyway- it’s supply and demand in that position, and unlike many other public employees they’re results oriented
There are only 6 programs that are profitable and DON'T take subsidies. In other words, those programs pay the University back for every scholarship, every recruiting trip, etc.
A little bit misleading. If it weren’t for Federal interference and PC sensitivities, schools would drop most revenue-negative intercollegiate sports, with a few exceptions. And most people accept the need to spend money for public relations gimmicks like sports teams anyway.
