You are right about all that. Big difference between 100 in the West Texas desert and 100 in Dallas. They also have more mosquito's over in Dallas. If you are moving from a dry climate, you will need time to adapt to the humid southeast US. Been in Central West Texas for over a year and have had a few people try to get me to move to Fort Worth/Dallas. Personally cannot handle big cities anymore and just not quite ready for that summer humidity yet.
We too are leaving California for SC. Can’t wait.
It’s getting a bit old for us being 5 hours from everything in Midland. But, the town is really growing. Heck, we just got a Saltgrass Steakhouse etc. :)
As somebody considering leaving West Texas for KC since I have family there and loved visiting growing up in Kansas....what is your view on how TX and KC is different? Which do you like better?

I like both places for widely varying reasons. I prefer TX as it is huge and has such a large variation in climates, (the past two winters in KC were an abomination) no state income tax, a growing economy and a friendly political climate for conservatives outside of the core of the major cities.
Should you move to a location like Johnson County, KS (KC’s SW suburbs) you’ll be among Republicans but many are moderates and squishes. Central KC is run by the Democrazies, I don’t recommend living anywhere on the Missouri side but in the northern suburbs of Clay and Platte counties. KC has a 1% income tax and a rising sales tax pushing toward 9%.
KC offers major sports, symphony, ballet, art galleries as do all major cities in Texas. The local economy is growing albeit slower than here in Texas and that owes to KC’s economic diversity, virtually none of which involves petroleum energy production.
After living in West Texas and not knowing your level of deprivation you just may find the KC area the solution to your desires. I simply tired of fighting snow and cold and we decided as retirement approaches to make the move. The humid climate here along the Coastal Bend of Texas has taken some adjustment after being raised in a drier California climate but I’ll never push another foot of snow or scrape ice off my rig’s windshield. And should I hit the Powerball next week I’ll have 4% more money in the check from the Texas Lottery folks.
Corpus is big enough to have just about everything we need in a city but not big enough to have the traffic nightmares of Houston or Austin or the DFW Metroplex.
Choose wisely.
Have some friends in Corpus, and they love it. Yeah, it’s a tough choice. We are in a place just booming like crazy right now, but we don’t see the good side since neither of us are in oil. We miss four seasons, though I am sure if we moved away we would be all “it’s too cold” during winter. Pick your poison I guess. Glad you enjoy Texas. It is a great state. Feel very lucky to be here.
