A Florida congressman has introduced a bill that would eliminate one of the U.S. government's most unusual institutions: the Raisin Administrative Committee, keepers of the national raisin reserve.
The raisin reserve is a program established by the Truman administration which gives the Agriculture Department a heavy-handed power to meddle in the supply and demand for raisins.
To limit the supply of raisins on the market, the government can simply take tons of raisins from the farmers who grew them.
Sometimes, the farmers don't get paid a cent in return.
On Thursday, Rep. Trey Radel (R)introduced a bill that would eliminate the reserves legal underpinnings. It would end the 1949 rule, Marketing Order 989, that created the Raisin Administrative Committee and the reserve.

Since we don’t have any kind of Grain reserve as every government has done for thousands of years why not a raisin reserve? We will need something to eat when the sh!t hits the fan
Nonsense, we must have a Raisin Reserve to keep ahead in the Fruitcake race.
As though San Francisco wasn’t enough?
Only feral government experts are qualified to solve the raisin problem. Well, heck. Only feral government experts are even aware of the inter-continental raisin crisis that could bring civilization to its knees. Do you have any idea what that stubby little fat creep with the funny-looking hair cut in Pyongyang does to the North Korean raisin crop every year?
This explains why John Kerry ran for President in 2004.
He wanted to free up more raisins.
Is there also a Federal Gin Reserve?
I like Craisins better anyway.
Big Ag gets more welfare and government protection than any other industry.
Sounds like something out of fuedalism doesn’t it?
Do they also have to pay taxes on the remaining raisins when they are sold?
This government must be stopped....in its tracks.
There is absolutely no reason for such a gargantuan, drooling monster to be alive and kicking.
Well, because if Obama's son was, like Obama hisself, a fruit, then heed prolly look jess lahk thet thar raisin...
The Raisin Reserve is just one of a thousand or more things that need to be shut down.
I heard of this years ago, back when I was in Farming/Horticultural Business for 22yrs. Absolute stupidity and insanity. Gov’t doesn’t solve problems; gov’t only makes problems. Kill the monster!
Because it’s better than a Sinkin’ Reserve.
Perhaps it's because they need something to store in Ft Knox cuz there's no gold left............
Why Does The United States Government Need A “Raisin Reserve?”
Why do we need full time law makers?
"But their free-market absolutism could be put to the test if they prevail in court and the price of raisins plummets. No one will be there to support them."
Isn't it touching how they care...
As source, instead of “Washington Post via Outside the Beltway Blog” should be “Heard It Through the Grapevine”.
I’m guessing this is why we haven’t heard from the California Raisins lately.
George Carlin said he always wanted to be in this commercial, “sittin’ down in the milk, with my raisin beret...”
CTTOI, haven’t heard from him in a while either.
I think there are the same types of regs. for oranges and avocados. (market orders)
Yep. and peanuts are controlled and sugar prices are artificially high because of government programs and...
Well, it's a start! Probably 3000 government employees on this Committee by now.
