John McCain Twists Arms Fast and Furiously to Confirm Obama’s Nominee for ATF Director

No agency better exemplifies the malfeasance of this administration than the ATF – Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This same organization that was involved in the most egregious gun running scandal in American history (Fast and Furious) is also prosecuting law-abiding gun owners with zealous furor. Yet, Senator John McCain has just ensured that the man who was at the scene of the crime gets confirmed as the next permanent director of ATF.

After being without a director for five years, McCain is hell-bent on rewarding Obama’s bad behavior by confirming the acting director, Todd Jones, as permanent director. Todd Jones was the highest ranking official during Fast and Furious. Mr. Jones has refused to answer questions from Senator Grassley, Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, concerning the scandal and any disciplinary action taken by his office.

What is even more concerning is that Jones is under investigation by the Office of Special Council over accusations that he retaliated against whistleblowers when he was U.S. Attorney in Minnesota. This is particularly disturbing given the necessity to shine some sun light inside the ATF. Jones has already warned ATF employees not to report on anything outside their chain of command. Additionally, Jones has already overseen egregious gun stings that went awry, such as Milwaukee Operation Fearless. In that instance, individuals were erroneously charged with crimes, federally owned automatic weapons lost, and a gun store was damaged by ATF agents.

There is no doubt that gun control activists want Jones confirmed so the ATF can begin its persecution of American gun owners instead of cleaning up its own broken house. So why would any Republican support his nomination?

Well, remember that earlier this month Mitch McConnell sent out his minions to cut a deal with Democrats to confirm every radical nominee under the sun. Now President Obama knows he will have 60 votes for every nominee, and is taking full advantage of the free ride to passage. Initially, Democrats were two votes shy, but McCain was seen on the Senate floor twisting arms. He convinced Senator Lisa Murkowski to flip her vote. Now they are just one vote shy and are holding the vote open until pseudo-moderate, Senator Heidi Heitkamp, flies into D.C.

Once again, we must ask, where is leadership? Where are their staffers? Where are the floor speeches against this? Is Mitch McConnell the party leader or is John McCain the defacto leader?

Update: Democrats won the cloture vote after Senator Heitkamp flew in from North Dakota to cast the 60th vote for Jones, laying waste to the notion that there are any pro-gun Democrats. The six Republicans who voted for cloture were Ayotte, Collins, Graham, Kirk, McCain & Murkowski.

I wonder how Grassley feels about his fellow cohort?

Obviously, the NSA has a really interesting file on Juan. He sounds as irrational as Gen. Petraeus did when the Chicago thugs blackmailed him about his affair.

McCain appears consistent in his support against the US Constitution.

I believe John McCain was a weak minded incompetent who was captured by the Viet Cong and brainwashed and placed here as a sleeper.

He is no American any longer, no matter what his Birth Certificate says. He is a traitor to our Constitution and our Country.

I find it most interesting that McCain reserves his most venomous criticism for his fellow Republicans (this goes over well with the “media”, of course, and he gets some honorable mentions and nice face time from them as a consequence). What I find a bit odd is that I never see him offering the slightest or mildest criticism of Democrats or Democratic policies. I know there have been posts here angry that he has been called names and this is unfair in light of his Vietnam war/POW record; fine, some of these are good points and well taken. But to the latter posters - don’t you find it a bit strange that when his newfound “cross the aisles” friend, Barack Obama, touts the murderous Marxist Ho Chi Minh as following the path of the Founding Fathers, Mr. Straight Talk Express is on a side track, silent, no response, no criticism of any type. I guess Mr. McCain has problems and issues only with people in his purported party.

I was severely beaten up by a ton of Freepers for saying the same thing in 08 elections.......... I have always thought that McCain was a weak sister, and cares more about himself than his country.

I used to credit him with his service before commenting on his treasonous BS. No more. It makes no difference. Whatever the positives were in his past have been more than destroyed by his villainous voting record.

I would recommend “The Nightingale’s Song” by Robert Timberg to my fellow FReepers. In it you will find an unvarnished profile of John McCain. Read it and make up your own mind.

Why doesn't McCain just go ahead and switch Party already?

I think this is what John McCain has lusted for all his life. He wants to be the big cheese. He wants to be the power broker, the one everyone looks to. He doesn't care about Conservatives. He doesn't care about principles or core values. He cares about being, “The Man”.

Very selfish and self-centered. It's about his personal aggrandizement.

What "service"? He sung like a canary to avoid torture, and later stonewalled POW-MIA families to avoid data release that would show his treason. He never was a "hero". Far from it.

If he switches parties to demonRATs, he’s no longer a “power broker” or “maverick” and is lost among the filth which that bunch of lib-dem commies, perverts, islamists and degenerates is made of. If he stays in the weak and compromised GOP, he stands-out as both of those false titles and is adored by the corrupt, criminal media for bucking the racist, sexist, homophobic pubbies.

Exactly. He craves the love of the media, and he knows the only way he will get recognition he thinks he has coming, is to stick his finger in some conservative's eye. He is utterly despicable.

I believe those Freepers who beat you up years ago have now seen the light.

I hope so anyway. I lost all faith in John McCain when he and the Catsup boy John Kerry went to Vietnam to find the lost POW and MIA’s and found nothing but cam home with a trade deal.

Anyone who allies himself with John Kerry (known traitor) is a traitor himself, and I mean everyone who voted for this ass to be Secretary of State.
