Sen. Mitch McConnell fighting for his political life? (Let's remove Addison Mithell McConnell Jr.)

It’s only just begun, but the reelection battle of Mitch McConnell – the top Republican in the Senate – is already shaping up to be the marquee race of the 2014 midterms.

Start with the primary challenge Senator McConnell faces from Matt Bevin, a wealthy, tea-party-backed businessman, reportedly willing to spend his own money. If McConnell makes it past Mr. Bevin, he’s poised to face likely Democratic nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s secretary of state and member of a well-connected political family, in the general election.

Add to the mix McConnelll’s mediocre job approval ratings in the state – only 45 percent in the latest poll, by the Republican firm Wenzel Strategies.

McConnell’s biggest liability may well be his leadership role in Washington. The Republican minority leader hasn’t been able to keep near-civil war from breaking out within his party. If there’s a government shutdown this fall, Republicans could come in for heavy public blame. Even if President Obama is deeply unpopular in Kentucky, Congress is worse off.

Two new polls show a race between McConnell and Secretary Grimes within the margin error, and on Friday, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report moved the race to tossup.

McConnell’s biggest blow so far has been the primary challenge by Bevin. The five-term McConnell is an experienced politico – he’s the longest-serving US senator in Kentucky history – and he put together an experienced reelection team early, including recruiting Kentucky tea party Sen. Rand Paul's campaign manager. He’s been raising money ever since Election Day 2012, and by mid-July reportedly had $9.6 million in the bank.

Mitch launches another ad against Matt Bevin

Two thoughts. He's scared. And I wish he'd fight this hard against 0bama. Just like McQueeg, saves his real anger for conservatives.

Certainly a risk but I'd hope McConnell has more class than Lugar did in Indiana last year.

I don't think he does.

I believe the only thing we can do is help Bevin *crush* him so soundly that his credibility with the general public is worthless.

Bevin needs run an ad that asks Senator Marbles why he is so scared of a conservative challenge. He needs to expose Mitch's voting record and how many times he has voted against to what his constituents want.

“Just like McQueeg, saves his real anger for conservatives.”

That’s because democrats are fellow travelers and conservatives are an actual threat to their power. McCain I think really didn’t care if he got the presidency. We would have gotten the same policies more or less with either person. And even if he lost, he’d still have his cushy senate seat. But JD Hayworth actually threatened his removal from power, so all barrells were trained on him without any letup.

McCain and his ilk really believe that American and the government cannot survive without them in power. They get so vain that anybody that stands against them must be crazy, or evil or both.

So Alison Grimes would be better for the GOP?

He’s already gone “Romney” with his “Bailout Bevins” ads.

Oop. Left out the “c” in Mitchell.
That must be the “c” for “Courage”, or “Conviction”, or maybe “Competence”?

Correctly omitted, in any case.

“COJONES”

That argument no longer applies. Mitch (Harry's Bitch) has and is selling us out behind closed doors on a daily basis. On the big stuff. He has deliberately enabled Reid's bunch to shove some nasty stuff on us.

No way I'm going to help put that slimy, back stabbing big government elitist back as "leader" for another 6 years.

Also, I'm not interested in what is "good for the GOP". The Senate GOP is a bunch of traitorous collaborators. McCain, Graham, McConnell may as well be deep cover plants by the Dims.
