It’s personal: Obamas carried $120,000 student loan debt for decades

For President Obama, the student loan crisis is personal.

The Obamas had not repaid all of their $120,000 student loan debts until his election to the Senate in 2004.

In a series of speeches last week, Obama pushed for measures that he hopes would force colleges to control costs for massively indebted students. He also expressed the view that law school should only last two years, rather than three.

These views are likely informed by Obama’s own college debts, which were recently quantified by The Chicago Sun-Times.

Though Obama received a scholarship to attend Occidental College, the money ran out after his freshman year. He paid the rest of his undergraduate tuition through loans and assistance from his family.

Michelle Obama took out loans to pay for college at Princeton University and Harvard University as well. The Obamas carried these debts for the first 25 years of their marriage.

The president and the first lady also racked up $40,000 each attending Harvard Law School. Including undergraduate loans, the Obamas owed a combined $120,000 after college.

When you go to “work” as a community agitator, it’s hard to pay back student loans?

Who would have guessed!?

Paying off loans for 25 years and both of them surrendered their law licenses?

What’s wrong with this picture?

$120,000 is peanuts compared to a Harvard education cost. Where did he get the money?

If he owed that much, it’s all interest. Harvard was not that expensive c 1983. I had one at Syracuse and one at Clarkson c 1985.

Yes but if not for those student loans and college degrees, President and Mrs. Obama never would have become President and First Lady. I believe the money was well spent and it is for everyone else too.

It was 12 grand a year to attend Harvard in 1983. I say that was a lot of money in those days. 12X4+48,000....add Michelle’s loans and 120,000 is not unreasonable.

Has anybody verified these figures?

Are these numbers just being copied from speeches and press releases?

Do we know what scolarships or aid these two received?

“Obama received a scholarship to attend Occidental College.”

Any good reporter would ask what were the scholarships and for how much.

Most of the Obama’s politics come from a place where they are trying to justify what a waste of space they both are.

The enabling, entitled, affirmative action president, who has never earned anything (will never value anything or have respect for anything)- will always grow a chip on his shoulder.

It has always been so.

Tier I law schools run $80,000 per year, and that's without room and board.

So was being black and a foreign student his key to the cut rate costs at a first rate school?

I think the school he went to in California, Occidental?, was probably on a foreign scholarship (there is some controversy over his Indonesian citizenship and that he claimed such there).

He may even have gotten scholarship (hell, screw the scholarship part - he was never that smart - call it a “Black Grant”) at Columbia.

IIRC, Harvard is ridiculously expensive, beyond him, his whole family, anything they owned, could ever own, or even wish about having or owning IMO.

I’m thinking that Harvard was one of two things:

1) It was funded by forces unknown (think Manchurian Candidate), or

2) Harvard really did get snowed by his awesome blackness, influence from unknown sources and they gave him a full-boat ticket to an education where he didn’t have to do squat. If you think about Harvard has endowment funds worth tens of billions of dollars; it would have been nothing for them to float his nothing education.
