160 Quarantined After Plague Death in Kyrgyzstan
Moscow Times ^ | 08/29/2013 | AP

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan — Four people have been hospitalized and 160 quarantined after a 15-year-old boy who ate marmot meat died of the bubonic plague last week, the Kyrgyz Health Ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry said the boy told medics he spent the previous week camping in the mountains where he had eaten barbecued marmot, a large ground squirrel that typically lives in mountainous areas.

The Health Ministry established a quarantine in parts of the mountainous northeast, but said there was no risk of an epidemic.

Four residents in the boy's village were hospitalized Wednesday after complaining of fever, though none had contact with the boy. A high fever is a common symptom of many diseases, such as the flu or measles.

There are several thousand cases of bubonic plague every year worldwide. People usually catch the disease after being bitten by an infected insect or animal or coming into close contact with an infected animal, like hunters removing an animal's skin.

Just in the nick of time! Here comes the Black Death to solve the Syrian problem!

(Oh, gosh! I sure hope that doesn't sound racist!)

Sounds like you came close to saying, “devil’s food cake,” which Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price says is “racist.” Mr. Price also greeted some of his critics by saying, “you are all white, go to hell.” This guy is more entertaining than Al Sharpton, I never could figure out why he didn’t get more national attention. He turned Dallas into a city that welcomes the New Black Panthers, Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam in South Dallas.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Note to self: throw out the ground hog. Joking aside, . I will be speaking about this very pathogen next Tuesday. Yersinia has potential for use as a bio weapon.

So, you can get Bubonic Plague by eating the meat of an infected animal like a marmot? What about the fleas infesting the marmot, encountered while you were skinning the beast?

I also understand that the bones of these animals can harbor leprosy, as does our own armadillo?

The comment and the article are misleading—few reporters have expertise in most subjects they pretend to know something about. I wager the Yersenia was picked up during the dressing process via the aerosol route since the pneumonic form of plague has a high mortality and is difficult to treat effectively. If a flea from the marmot infected him, he would more likely have the septicemic or bubonic form which is more treatable and not contagious like the pneumonic form. In short, he had the pneumonic plague—a potential bioweapon.

I concour that this likely was the pneumonic form. Francisella is also highly contagious during the skinning process. Has anyone looked at the price of doxycycline lately? Its gone from $.04/100mg capsule to $4/100mg capsule. Doxycycline is the main antibiotic against the majority of weaponized bacterial agents.

If the marmot was not cooked thoroughly then the intestinal form of Yersinia would have affected the boy. It is rare but as lethal as the pneumonic form.

I keep a bit of doxy on hand but it seems ciprofloxacin has a broader spectrum of use against so many bacterial infections, I also stock it. Keep in mind the shelf-life of most antibiotics is far longer than the label states—an FDA requirement.

We see a lot more Francisella in the US since it is endemic in the Midwest. Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin work for both Francisella and Yersenia. Cipro also works for Bacillus anthracis.
