OK, I'm confused.
Why would any company only write an iPhone/iPad app for their product? The last time I checked there were about 10 times more Android device than iPhone/iPads.
Even Drudge only has an iPhone/iPad app. Nothing for Android.
Is it just the cachet of the iPhone, or am I missing something here?
There are probably 2 reasons why someone would only write an app for the iPhone, or for iPhone first. The most likely reason is they think that iPhone users are target market for their app/ or represent the largest numbers of potential early adopters.
Another reason could be they like the terms of the iPhone App store better.
For in house use? Or for use by the public?
If the former, the iPhone has a much stronger security model. Or even for the latter, if the public app is financially related.
You can't possibly be serious.
The reason is this: the iPhone development environment is straight from the 1990s, and people with the skill-set to write iPhone apps generally are not capable of porting them to other platforms.
Installed base and development staff. Very little expertise carries over from Objective-C and JAVA. Objective-C is a stone-aged hack from nEXT or Next or NeXt or some such crap.
Android is Google and Google is the DNC.
Also , Android gives access to the NSA and FBI to their OS and the devices that use them.
I said it was possible. As much as you or I might not agree, there are probably a few people that feel that way. For some reason that I can’t speculate on, this late at night. (I knew someone would call me on this, but I did want to be thorough)
Well I guess you are not Rush Limbaugh posting as FredZarunga.
My son writes them for the iPhone, iPad, etc. He makes about $200K/year....one game he wrote pretty much pays his bills each month.
Every one of these devices has a Drudge app. It is called a “web browser”.
I look at Analytics numbers for clients and traffic from apple devices dwarfs android devices. I think those numbers on number of devices is skewed. No doubt current sales numbers reflect what you said, but not devices in use.
iPhone has the upscale market locked, so that’s where developers want to go. Otherwise, programs can be written in Java and forked to iOS and Android using PhoneGap. But if you know the iOS environment really well and want to target upscale users, why bother.
Several reasons:
There is no single version of the Android operating system. Almost every device manufacturer tweaks it in some way. It is very, very difficult to write an app that will work with every version, or that won’t be broken with any companies next release, i.e. support nightmare.
Android users are cheap and less willing to pay anything at all for an app. (True... Google it....)
The open environment for Android is like the Wild West and the odds are that your app will be cracked open, distributed freely and you will die broke.
There are other reasons but the above pretty well cover it.
He could go elsewhere to other platforms...He got a good education from GT in CSE....But he’s happy doing what he does working by contract and always has 2 or 3 follow-ons backed up.
Good for him!!
There is no centralized distribution channel.
There are plenty of Drudge apps. Where are you looking?
“GET IT ON THE GO: DRUDGE IPHONE/IPAD APP... “
Not looking for a Drudge app, but just wondered.
