Are You a Scott Walker Conservative?
Slate ^ | November 18, 2013 | John Dickerson

If you are a Republican and you like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, then you probably already have your candidate for the 2016 presidential campaign. If you do not like Christie, then your candidate for 2016 is Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

....... If you are uncomfortable with Christie as the default establishment choice, there is an incentive to choose someone else early. Because if the New Jersey governor’s opponents split their vote among several candidates in the primaries, Christie will be the GOP nominee.

[SNIP]

Walker took a stand, was targeted by the full force of the Democratic machine, and stayed alive. He won a recall election with a larger margin than his original victory. He raised $30 million for that race, so he knows how to tap wealthy donors. Social conservatives also consider him one of their own for his pro-life views and his pedigree: His father was a Baptist minister.

[SNIP]

Walker has a book coming out tomorrow, Unintimidated: A Governor's Story and a Nation's Challenge, which has just the title you'd want if you were trying to use your record as governor as the platform for a national run. His biggest challenge may be his temperate demeanor. Conservatives want a fighter, and while Walker throws punches, he doesn’t seem nearly as pugilistic as Christie, Cruz, and Paul. Personality traits can matter a great deal in primaries where policy distinctions between candidates are nearly nonexistent. Walker’s other challenge is that he’s still facing re-election in 2014. The polls are tight, but he could take a lesson from Christie: A strong win makes you seem strong.

...Walker’s other challenge is that he’s still facing re-election in 2014. The polls are tight, but he could take a lesson from Christie: A strong win makes you seem strong.

Homes raided, subpoenas issued targeting conservative groups and allies of Scott Walker ".....................The WSJ says the latest actions are taking place under Wisconsin’s John Doe law, which makes it difficult for the groups involved to defend themselves publicly.

The law, “Bars a subpoena’s targets from disclosing its contents to anyone but his attorneys. John Doe probes work much like a grand jury, allowing prosecutors to issue subpoenas and conduct searches, while the gag orders leave the targets facing the resources of the state with no way to publicly defend themselves.”

The orders reportedly began in the office of Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Bruce Landgraf just days before Democrat Mary Burke announced that she’d be running for governor of the state. Landgraf works for Milwaukee County Democratic District Attorney John Chisholm — who led a similar effort against Wisconsin conservatives and Gov. Walker in the past. This is the second such “John Doe” investigation in just three and a half years.

Eric O’ Keefe, director of Wisconsin’s Club For Growth and one of the groups being targeted, said that he knows of at least three of the targets who have had their homes raided. During the raids, law enforcement officers confiscated computers and files. A person with knowledge of the search warrants said they came at the requests of a man named Dean Nickel."...............

While gagged by provisions and the subpoenas, a source close to Watchdog.org told the Wisconsin Reporter they believe this is a taxpayer funded campaign simply for opposition research purposes.

“This is a taxpayer-funded, opposition-research campaign,” one source said. “This is not a question of what conservatives did wrong. It’s a question of one party in this state using prosecutorial powers to conduct a one-sided investigation into conservatives.”...........

After hearing Walker’s mushy reaponse to the partial govt shutdown on Mark Levin I think Walker belongs in Wisconsin.

He sounded like Karl Rove. I was disappointed.

Conservatives have a deep bench of 2016 presidential candidates.

I liked how Walker stood and then stood again and the stood again and WON against an unprecedented assault on him by the Left at the Wisconsin capital - academia, media, private and public unions, etc.

I’d read earlier of the tax funded opposition research being done on Walker (seizing computers of supporters and allies) and I was floored. [Story linked in Post #1.]

We shouldn’t dismiss Gov. Scott Walker. It’s very apparent the Left hasn’t.

I admired how Walker stood up to the Unions too but like I said he belongs in Wisconsin.
We need politicians who have no problem standing up to Democrats on a national level not just a state level. Walker’s criticism of the shutdown is a deal breaker for me.

The shutdown was idiotic. Lee is already backpedaling.

“Deal breaker?”

I applaud Cruz & Co.!

Obama-Reid closed down the government.

Walker would not let the feds shut down Wisconsin parks.

I believe his remarks on the government shut-down were made to distinguish himself from Congressional candidates stepping out from the wings.

They are ALL going to say things about each other — will they all be “deal breakers?”

Gov. Walker’s fight in Wisconsin gave us a long, long look at his mettle. I like what I saw.

I also like Sen. Ted Cruz.

You don’t want a winner, you want a yeller and a probable loser.

Walker has won twice in democratic controlled Milwaukee county and reformed government. (Reduced spending)

He has won the Governor’s office twice and changed/reformed government to reduce spending.

He took on the democrats and the national unions and beat them badly.

He is a true conservative and a great guy who knows how to get things done based on reason and logic.

We are not out to win arguments with Liberals who lie and do not understand logic.

We need to gain control and reform government (smaller and less spending) with conservative principles so that we can safe this great country.

Look at the big picture and not just cherry pick your issue!

Walker said he didn’t think we should shutdown the govt over Obamacare.

The way he expressed that was a disappointment. I expect better from a Conservative who had the strength to take on Unions.

Unfortunately Republican presidential wannabes will say things that will be deal breakers. I no longer blindly vote for any Republican politician. If they start sounding mushy they won’t get my vote.

We need candidates who can advance an idea without sounding like a lefty or a mushy moderate.

I’m not looking for a yeller just an eloquent speaker.

Disagree, the shutdown was ok and could have been a great oppertunity to advance Conservativism. What was idiotic was Boehner/Mcconell’s response during it which was a total fail.

The left is trying to select the “opposition’s” candidate once more. Their assessments should always be more than merely suspect.

The Left is making mischief.

He’s not suggesting Walker be president.

He’s taking a shot at Cruz, Paul and Lee.

And he’s also trying to undermine Walker.

Scott Walker is not a lefty or mushy moderate.

Then let all candidates speak, but it is what they have done that is more important.

Look at all the political liars out there.

Actually, I don’t want Wisconsin to lose Walker to a national office, because there is more that he can do in Wisconsin. Walker is a doer, not just an eloquent speaker.

He has the stomach to deal with these Liberals and win.

I like Cruz et al too, but I have known and followed Walker for over 20 years. He is a conservative winner.

Measured with the Wisconsin yard stick, I’d agree with you. But by any other measure he is just another mushy moderate.

Just sit out the election.

See how well went in 2012.

I agree with you that I would like a real government shutdown, this is not the issue to determine whether someone is conservative or even the best way to repeal Obamacare.

Even though I supported a federal government shutdown, it was never going to succeed. You can’t change government overnight, it will take time and the ability to overcome the entrenched interests. Walker has done that big time.
