It has been reported that Alabama has posted their rest stops with signs prohibiting weapons. The signs are reported to read:
No weapons allowed past this point
I am writing an article about it, which would benefit from an actual picture of one of the signs, but I have not been able to acquire one yet.
If you are traveling where you might see such a sign, I would appreciate it if you would take a picture and send me one. You can send the picture in an freepmail to marktwain.

Rest stops on interstate highways are generally federal property or easements, not state property. However, the state police or highway patrol have enforcement jurisdiction over them.
The signs have been reported. We used to have them in Arizona, but we got rid of them, and it was the State Department of Public Safety (state patrol) that put them up and took them down.
What a comfort these signs must be to some lowlife looking for his next rape victim in a rest stop toilet . . .

I live in Asheville, NC - these signs are everywhere. They are very annoying. Do people seriously think if someone has nefarious intentions, that they will see this sign and turn around and not do as planned?

Do they have the force of law? That is, if you are found out, can the proprietor do more than ask you to leave?
Good question...not sure.
It’s a GLBT protection law so that they can recruit children without fear.
In GA, they do not. Business owners can ask you to leave, and if you don’t, you’re trespassing, but that’s the extent of it. Other states differ on this.
