Obama: 2014 'year of action' on jobs
The Hill ^ | January 11, 2014 | Peter Schroeder

President Obama called on Congress to make 2014 a “year of action” for the economy – starting with extending emergency unemployment benefits.

In his weekly address, the president touted the gains the economy has made in the last few years, while urging policymakers to do more to boost jobs and put people back to work.

The first item on the agenda should be getting federal unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless back in place, he said. That program was allowed to expire at the end of 2013 when Congress failed to extend the program, cutting off benefits for 1.3 million Americans still looking for work.

Lawmakers are currently debating extending the program, and Obama urged them to act swiftly to get it done, while jabbing at Republicans for demanding its extension be paid for and paired with other job-boosting reforms.

“This vital economic lifeline helps people support their families while they look for a new job. And it demands responsibility in return by requiring that they prove they’re actively looking for work,” he said. “But Republicans in Congress just let that lifeline expire for 1.3 million Americans.

“Congress needs to finish the job right away,” he added.

The president also touted his future efforts to highlight the economy, saying he plans to focus on high-tech manufacturing and education in the next week, while meeting with major CEOs later in the month to help get more of the jobless back in the workforce.

And in his State of the Union address at the end of the month, Obama said he wants to embark on a “national mission of making sure our economy offers everyone who works hard a fair shot at opportunity and success.”

“After everything you’ve done to recover and rebuild from crisis these past five years – after all your hard work and sacrifice – that’s what you deserve,” he said.

I want to pull my hair out from the constant use of the term "DESERVE!"

This truly is the "twilight zone."

Obama has killed the economy and jobs with his dictates, laws and regulations on business - Obamacare, EPA, etc. etc. etc.

Big government sucks the life out of the private sector.

“Big government sucks the life out of the private sector. “

The totally incompetent manager truly sees himself as indispensable to every meeting, every decision and every discussion or action. He sucks the life out of the company, causes a crisis atmosphere and stops any effective action from being taken. But he truly sees himself as indispensable and the savior of all. (In my experience he gets a golden parachute when his actions force the plant to close. Everybody else just loses their job. He will tell you in all sincerity that he did his best but you can’t fly with eagles when you work with turkeys.)

talks July 31, 2011 in Washington, DC. Obama announced that congressional leaders had

After five years of career incineration in his determination to “focus like a laser on jobs,” what kind of liberish threatens a “year of action?” Does it mean importing more votes?

Thanks! :)

I was curious about what Biden was looking at (even “curiouser” was that the WH handed it out).

Yeah, I am curious why the WH handed it out, but I’m curious about a lot of things the WH does that make no sense.

“I was curious about what Biden was looking at”

He’s not looking at anything really, he’s just got the sudden urge to fly and the window stopped him.

In his weekly address, the president touted the gains the economy has made in the last few years.

There are now less people employed in American than in 1978, but the population has grown by 100 million.

And yet "employment" is obama's greatest achievement.

Socialism: It fails EVERY TIME...

People Not In Labor Force Soar To Record 91.8 Million; Participation Rate Plunges To 1978 Levels [can access larger graphics at source link]

"Curious why despite the huge miss in payrolls the unemployment rate tumbled from 7.0% to 6.7%? The reason is because in December the civilian labor force did what it usually does in the New Normal: it dropped from 155.3 million to 154.9 million, which means the labor participation rate just dropped to a fresh 35 year low, hitting levels not seen since 1978, at 62.8% down from 63.0%. "

And the piece de resistance: Americans not in the labor force exploded higher by 535,000 to a new all time high 91.8 million.
