ATTENTION Musicians, Aspiring Musicians, etc. SONGSTERR
January 14, 2014 | This Just In

Good evening,

I was told about a website called Songterr this evening. It's basically a guitar tabs site which include rhythms. Songterr features automated tabs with midi playback attached.

Have any of you used/use Songterr? If so, do you like it? If so, what's the pro's? Con's?

Thank you, TJI

At work so I really can't check well but the little I did sample seemed good for learning. Black Mountain Rag - Doc Watson version was a little thin but the basics were there.

I'll know better when I can listen at home.

I use Truefire.com

They have all kinds of stuff, but you have to pay for it. There are all kinds of lessons from beginner to professional with tabs and slow motion videos.

I have learned some really sophisticated songs and techniques using their stuff. They do have a lot of free sample lessons too.

If you wanted to take private lessons from a world class guitar teacher, but couldn’t afford it, I’d suggest you check it out.

Thanks, prisoner6. I hate to ask stupid questions....but here goes....

I’m assuming you’re playing guitar tabs?, or bass? Drums?

Thanks, P-Marlowe. I haven’t visited the resource, but how do they acquire their tabs? The one thing that doesn’t thrill me about Songsterr is that it’s like a Wikipedia for guitar and bass tabs. Drums as well. Anyone can submit tabs.

I play mostly acoustic guitar nowadays. Older classic country, some folk...some John Prine, Lightfoot, depends on my mood. Also instrumental...Last Steam Engine Train, stuff like that.

Stiff fingers limit a lot, LOL. Years ago I did all the usual 50's 60's music, heavy on the Surf sounds. Had an original Ventures model Mosrite.

It’s pretty cool, there’s a bunch of songs I learned how to play using it.

Had and original Ventures model Mosrite? Tell me didn’t sell it.

This is mainly for our son. Although, I play bass and guitar, but not nearly as nimble and riffed as he.

Forgot to mention I am pretty much self taught. My grandmother was a concert pianist. She was offered a position with the Boston Symphony but turned it down to stay with her husband. That was a LONG time ago.

She taught me piano and how to read music. In high school I started drums as well as French horn.

I played anything then, now it's just a little finger pickin'.

Beautiful. You’re blessed to have been taught by your own grandmother. My grandma was a singer and piano player. She mainly played honky tonk, but could play other styles. My grandmother died before she could pass on these gifts, but my mother, father, siblings, and I still inherited the genes. I play clarinet in HS (drums/percussion and trumpet were already filled....naturally). Also ukulele, but than again, everyone growing up on the island played ukulele and sang.

Glad you never stopped.

Yup, sold it about 5 years ago. My oldest son used it for awhile and managed to mark it up. Still played great but we were moving and I didn't want to haul it around. Went to a collector in NYC for WAY too little money. Since you play bass have you ever seen Dave's World of Fun Stuff on You Tube?

This is his latest video, I haven't checked it out yet. He is a wealth of info, especially on bass!

I have not seen Dave’s World. Thanks for the link. I’ll check that out.

Ouch on the sale of your Vintage, but I understand. We’ve sold many instruments. One, in particular, was a one of a kind drum made specifically for our family. I was not too happy about that sale. I couldn’t talk a family member (who is to remain anonymous) out of it.
