Will Republicans Doom Themselves with Amnesty?

This week, Republicans in the House had a closed-door immigration meeting to discuss whether or not to push immigration reform in the coming year. From what we've learned, three factions squared off to discuss the issue. The first faction is opposed to any new legislation as the current legislation isn't being enforced by the Obama administration. A second faction wants to bring immigration reform to the House floor for voting now, while a third faction supports new legislation but believes that this is the wrong time to do it as the midterm elections of 2014 are almost upon us. I find it quite disheartening, but not surprising, that the Republican Party is willing to shoot itself in the foot with immigration reform when ObamaCare is a sweet pitch hanging over that plate that's just begging to be hit out of the ballpark.

Fortunately to some extent, it seems that the pro-reform crowd, such as John Boehner, are lukewarm about bringing up such legislation in an election year. It appears that such legislation over illegal aliens and amnesty are off the table, but we've thought that before only to be brought up by the establishment Republicans. There are still those, such as Paul Ryan, who are pushing amnesty and are not letting go. Apparently the majority of those present in the meeting (some say as high as eighty percent) were against moving forward on illegal immigration reform. This is both good and bad.

The good is that the Republicans should be focusing their energy upon ObamaCare and the economy and putting out a coherent, cohesive message to that effect. There's no surer way to piss off the conservative base by pushing forward amnesty and such an act just plays into the hands of the liberal Democrats. The bad is that many fake conservatives will tout their tough-on-amnesty views while running for election, but will immediately rejoin the establishment flock and work to undermine the country by opening the floodgates to illegals. It's astounding to think that they believe they can increase the percentage of Latinos that vote Republican by doing so when all evidence suggests otherwise.

One of the big problems is that big business is pushing amnesty as they want cheap foreign labor. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook handed out documents to the group promoting the amnesty agenda. Establishment Republicans are very cozy with big business and don't give a damn for the average working stiff. We're constantly being told that amnesty for illegal aliens will boost our economy, but even the Congressional Budget Office has exploded that lie. We have millions of Americans out of work, but somehow flooding the market with even more labor, which will be cheaper, will somehow get Americans back to work? Sheer lunacy.

What's incredibly frustrating is that we have a golden opportunity to take back the Senate and expand the majority in the House in order to roll back the damage done by Obama. We had a similar opportunity in 2012, but the establishment Republicans worked against conservative Tea Party candidates and pushed establishment types such as Romney. The result was that we lost. Yet they're doing the same thing again, but this time on a bigger scale.

If Republicans would just focus on job creation, energy, and replacing ObamaCare, the upcoming midterm election would be a slam dunk. Yet they muddy the waters by constantly bringing up illegal immigration and fighting against the base of the party. I wish that Republicans cared more about the country than about being popular in DC.

Affirmative. With the best possibility of capturing both houses of Congress within their grasp.....they will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. GOP=Losers. Stick a fork in them.

Freepers seem to have really short memories.

AMNESTY is the ACORN-orchestrated big hammer that drew millions of Hispanics into the streets in 2006, and handed Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House. It began the economic slide that culminated in the financial crisis, and the crapstorm we find ourselves in today.

I have been warning for a YEAR that SEIU/ACORN/COI/OFA have been organizing to use Amnesty again in 2014 to retake the House, and the Minimum wage push is a big part of that.

Do you think that 100’s of Orgs, all devoted to Min Wage AND Amnesty just pop up overnight??

Repubs are trying to derail this, by trying to make amnesty their platform. I don’t have to like it, but I do understand what it is about.

I hear what you are saying. However if Repubs push amnesty BEFORE they regain the senate, it will not matter what they propose--i.e. green cards but no path to citizenship; the Senate will redo it to give the illegals citizenship, and all that entails.

As for the demonstrations, I think enough Americans are awake to the economy and what that would do to the country to keep amnesty from passing--that is, if Boehner et al can grow a spine and man up--big, big IF!

They’re not “shooting themselves in the foot”, they’re first killing the US then themselves. It’s Republican murder-suicide.

Republicans that have chosen to be Neo-Democrat RINOs on the topic of Amnesty for illegal alien invaders from Mexico will cause their base to oppose them.

Amnesty in 1986 did not work, and never should be attempted again.

With hold all donations to the RNC until Boehner is out of his position as Speaker.
