Cornerstone University Brings Christian Perspective on Immigration Reform

Cornerstone University will host a day-long event to bring awareness to immigration reform and the importance of taking action from a biblical perspective. Jenny Yang, co-author of “Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion and Truth in the Immigration Debate,” will be the featured speaker Feb. 12 on campus to kick-off the event. Yang, director of advocacy and policy for the Refugee and Immigration Program at World Relief, will break down the debate and what it means to individuals and the church. “Biblically, Jesus commands us to care for the stranger and alien,” said Chip Huber, dean of student engagement, who organized the event. “Immigration reform is right on the top of the political agenda right now. We don’t just want our students to be aware of what the issue is, but be able to do something about it.” Many Christians are left conflicted about the issue, unsure of what our faith requires of us on this pressing issue, Yang explains in her book. Artist Pamela Alderman, who was featured in ArtPrize, will display her watercolor series “Courage Ablaze” at 4 p.m. in the Corum. Along with the artwork, a Congolese family, known as the Les Clay musical group will share their story of immigration through music. “We have this incredible opportunity as followers of Christ to welcome people who are strangers in our community,” said Huber. “We can provide physical help and educational help. And we also have this opportunity to welcome them into the family of God.” The day will end with a film at 7 p.m. in the Hansen Athletic Center, ”The Dream is Now,” depicting the challenges of immigration within the local community.

“Welcoming the Stranger: I have never read in the bible where it says citizens pending illegally entry into America, may by all means use any means to come up with thousands of dollars and we should not hold it against the illegals who will hire some of the most dangerous criminals in Mexico known as Mexican drug cartels, who kill children, women, men.Dangerous criminals to whom the Mexicans will hand over thousands of dollars to smuggle them into America are to be welcomed strangers.Nevermind the money Mexicans hand over to drug cartels keep them in business so that they can continue to expand their criminal organizations. They never say anything about parents in the country illegally who entrust their small children to dangerous criminal drug cartels to be alone with their kids to smuggle them into the country. What is the justification these welcome the strangers use for illegals who break a great number of laws and morally disobey the laws of the country they are in ? The bible does not say, you may drive without licenses/insurance/you may buy fake or stolen documents/you may cause accidents upon doing so take off and flee/you may lie to the gov by claiming fraudulent child tax credits.I wonder at what point does the church tell the illegals aside from what they think they want to hear but being blunt saying you cannot use fraud, you cannot drive without licenses insurance, etc, etc, etc. The church fails to fulfill all their moral obligations even when means being unpleasant that the bible also says this.It cannot remain all watered down. The churches are not doing their duties how they are suppose too.

Well Chip. If I see you took in 20 illegals into your house, I’ll do the same.

Good points. And the Bible doesn´t encourage fathers to leave behind their wives and children, and then return back to their countries with AIDS and a few dollars. In Mexico, we have a real shortage of Dad´s who show gallantry, chivalry, heros for little boys to model their lives. We are suffering in our homes, and this causes delincuencies.

Where is the exact scripture which commands this on secular govts?

Jesus never mentioned government must have open borders/amnesty.

Its really annoying when people impose on Jesus their desire for open border and amnesty then foist it on the govt.

We do welcome strangers... as long as they come in the front door. We don’t welcome thieves.

It’s offensive.

...anyone who does not enter...by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. John 10:1

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Romans 13:1-2

You are both correct. The United States has roughly 4% of the world's population and 4% of the world's land area. We are the most generous and welcoming nation on the planet.

We do not need to be lectured by nations who make their places such miserable places to live that people want to leave.

Nor do we need to be lectured by fake Christians who want to fill their emptying pews at public expense.

The lowdown on three of our big sources of illegal immigrants:

  1. Mexico: Has a population density similar to Tennessee, hardly our most populous or crowded state. Strictly enforces their laws against illegal immigration.
  2. Somalia: More than 2000 miles of coastline astride one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Temperate semi-arid climate comparable to southern California. Population density lower than Colorado. It is a sh*thole only because the Muslims in the north of the country are constantly making war on the Christians and Animists in the south. Guess which group represents the overwhelming share of our Somali imports?
  3. China: Granted they are the most populated country in the world. But they are also one of the largest. Their actual population density is most similar to our state of Florida. And, like much of Florida, they also have a mild climate which can produce two and even three crops per year. We wouldn't mind it so much if they sent us their best and brightest citizens, but they mostly send us either (a)their elderly under family reunification schemes where they get government benefits like social security that those of us who have paid into the system for years can only dream about or (b)their very poor who take advantage of all the free stuff available. Their so-called "sponsors" are some of the most wealthy and well-educated people in America. Maybe they ought to actually sponsor them.

“Biblically, Jesus commands us to care for the stranger and alien,”

He did no such thing. "welcome the 'stranger'" does not even mean 'stranger'. This is from the Hebrew Torah, and the word 'Ger' means 'convert to Judiasm'. You are supposed to treat the foreign CONVERT as well as a native born Jew. It does NOT mean to let the robber who breaks into your house have your food, cash and a spare bedroom, as this ignoramus Jenny Yang wants America to.

What Jesus DID say however, is:

"I tell you, he who enters not through the gate, but through the window is a thief and a robber" (John 10;1)

"Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21)

First you take over the Universities. Then the entire school system, then government bureaucracies, then the churches - last.

The way the left is moving in America.

We do NOT have a Biblical responsibility to open our borders to anyone who comes here anymore than we have a responsibility to house anyone who comes to our door.

This Country and ITS GOVERNMENT, belong to the people who are citizens - natural born or legally naturalized - NOT the idiots we elect to office.

Nothing makes me angrier than people who use Christianity to excuse illegal immigration. We ARE being “kind to the stranger.” We’re giving them amnesties, food stamps, medical care, free schooling, etc., etc. But if we are to treat them “the same as the native born,” then that means they are also subject to our laws, the same as the native born are! The law requires illegals be arrested and deported. Humanely, yes...but arrested and deported. That’s not being “unkind to the stranger,” not if the native born also must obey the law!
