At a panel discussion on CPACs main stage Friday, libertarians and social conservatives agreed that while they share some core beliefs, they remain at odds over the issue of same-sex marriage.
Tom Minnery, president and CEO of CitizenLink, said there are many things that social conservatives appreciate in the Libertarian Partys platform.
Libertarians have led the way in helping us understand the need to cut back wasteful government and to get government out of our lives, Minnery said. But we also find this in that party platform: Government does not have the authority to license personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices.
Alexander McCobin, co-founder and president of Students For Liberty, disagreed with the assumption that being a libertarian means being a member of the Libertarian Party.

The libertarians at CPAC were saying that there were much more important issues than prohibiting same sex marriage and keeping pot illegal.
Then why at every turn were they pushing FOR the legalization of both?
If there were more important issues, leave these low rung social issues off the table instead of pushing FOR them.

Government does not have the authority to license personal relationships. Well, he's right about that part. You only have all this 'gay marriage' nonsense because people invited the state to get involved in something instituted by God.

It is important to remember that gay marriage does not involve the use of less government, but of more. No one has a "right" to government services and recognition, but the twisted ideas of the left make it seem like we should. They refuse to see the dangerous path this will lead us down, however. As though there have never been tyrannical governments as a result of too much authority.

Libertarians are not conservatives. We share “some” of the same goals, but are far from kissing cousins. And it is always a libertarian that garners 5,10,15% of the vote away from the conservative...not the liberals...and guess who wins.

conservative is conservative there is no social or fiscal.
You are correct, just like in this special election, libertarians are vote splitters by payment or stupidity.

CPAC and the ACU are a fraud. They are obviously over run with agenda pushing liberterians and careerist GOPe types looking to network. This story and the pro amnesty panel they had are a joke. Just about every year it seems there is some buffonery going on at CPAC. I really question its usefulness at this point.

Taking a position that the state must provide something just "because" is not a libertarian principle position....a libertarian would expect the government demonstrate a compelling reason for government involvement in anything...
So show me a reason for government involvement in marriage? (Well reproduction but that only applies to straight marriage)

Well, he's right about that part. You only have all this 'gay marriage' nonsense because people invited the state to get involved in something instituted by God. That is one of the weirdest things to say when marriage in America comes up, it is meaningless, and useless, but it does distract people.
That has nothing to do with the United States, or even religion, since some religions have gay marriage, and some have polygamy, and in America you aren't required to have a religion at all.

The libertarians at CPAC were saying that there were much more important issues than prohibiting same sex marriage and keeping pot illegal. They always say that as not-so-subtle cover for the fact that they despise these social issues. Giving them short shrift is the way they show their contempt for real conservatism.
