OK, I bite. What level of radiation did she detect with the Geiger Counter?

You do know that there are many places with background radiation that is certainly detectable.

Not all radio active material is dangerous and not all of it comes from broken nuke reactors.

I am not discounting the danger. It is clear that the Japanese government is lying about how bad it really is. But lets not all quit eating fish because of the perceived threat.

Remember “mad cow disease”? Remember the “swine flue” threat under Jimmy “the goober” Carter?

Is a real study in order? Probably

If I can get to the sea food store I buy local here in New England
I dont eat anything from China.
My experince is that almost every bit of seafood in the frozen foods section is from China.
I have found some decent flash frozen dolphin(mahi-mahi) and tuna from S America I will stick with that.
Look at your garlic labels too.Its almost all from the Chi-Coms.

No baseline? Did the student test fish from a river in North America? Something that would never have touched the ocean? How about the Atlantic? Did she test fish caught in the Gulf of Mexico? As has already been asked, what were the readings, and how do they know if it came from the Japanese plant?

A Geiger counter is an extremely simple device that does not do energy discrimination by itself. You either need to do an energy study using filters (that will sort out beta and gamma as a first cut) to at least get a handle on energy, or, better, do energy spectroscopy. You can use sodium iodide scintillators for that. In my lab we have hyperpure germanium detectors for high resolution energy spectroscopy. If you see 134Cs you almost surely are looking at reactor effluents. Anything else could be either natural background or weapons testing fallout. We have looked at soils from Japan and found very slightly elevated levels of 134Cs, but nothing (so far) in seafood (plants or fish).

Why aren’t they checking to make sure that this radiation is not getting into our food chain?
Stupid question! this along with rampant low cost heroin and other drugs killing our youth across this country, the affordable care act, the economy, passing anti gun legislation in the dead of night, crime and the inability to protect your self and family, all part of a plan to rid themselves of this pestilence that is plaguing thier right to govern over the masses for eternity

Anyone who eats seafood right now is trying to die young.

Meanwhile, PBS reporter Miles O’Brien has pointed out the extreme negligence of the U.S. government when it comes to testing seafood for Fukushima radiation.

I'm old enough to remember when the US government actually looked out for your best interests.

Numbers? Baselines? You can grab a potatoe ;-) and it will set off a $600 geiger counter. I am not going to be panicking over this.

The govt knows they just don’t want you to know. We stopped eating seafood a week after Fukashima. Have not touched even a can of tuna. Now we are looking at getting a small handheld geiger counter to take to the store to test produce prior to purchase. A lot of stuff is coming from CA.

I see an opportunity here for US farm grown seafood to explode into the market place. Unfortunately, I don’t have the business savvy (I’m an IT tech guy) to know where to get started for funding a start up. It seems like the only way banks will loan money to a business is if they already are up and running.

Any advice from the Freeper community on how to get a start-up funded?

Alberta has high levels of radon gas. She probably was measuring background radon in her home.

100 percent of the carp, seaweed, shark and monkfish

So my question is - how did the carp get infected?

Be calm everyone. Only 15 out of 15 Bluefin tuna were contaminated with radiation.

It is not like all of them are.

What do you bet her Geiger counter wasn’t calibrated and was reading far higher than the true value.

I actually made a mistake a few months ago with an amp meter — was reading the 10X output as though it were 1X. Thinking, Man how is that AC using so much power?
