A riot involving around 1,000 people broke out last Saturday in Cangnan county of Wenzhou city, Zhejiang province, resulting in the hospitalization of five chengguan, China's notoriously abusive and under-regulated urban enforcement officials. The alleged cause for the riots was the five's brutally killing a civilian. According to reports, the chengguan "hit the man with a hammer until he started to vomit blood, because he was trying to take pictures of their violence towards a woman, a street vendor." This man later died while being rushed to the hospital.

According to eyewitness accounts, the crowd -- which was growing at an alarmingly rapid pace -- was shouting for the chengguan to be murdered on the spot for what they did, yelling: "Kill them! Kill them!" They proceeded to beat the five until they were bloodied and unconscious, and later collectively tipped over the ambulance that had arrived to provide medical treatment.

Sometimes, the people have had enough, and they don’t care about laws. They want justice by any means.

In China, there isn't any law except what the Communist Party says it is at any particular moment.

But you're right, there's a lot of pent-up rage here.

If I was a CCP official, I might be a little worried.

Well noted. The People’s Liberation Army numbers somewhere around 200-million. They’re out numbered 800-million to 200-million. And somewhere in that 800-billion, there are those who dream of freedom.

No totalitarian regime ever lacks thugs to do their dirty work.

Chengguan are the low-level enforcement arm of local government policies. They don’t have as much authority as police in China, who are also better armed.

Chengguan are the ones who chase street vendors, enforce parking and traffic rules, deal with property and zoning, enforce the thousands of China’s grinding petty rules, etc... As such, they are often where the average citizen sees daily government control and for practical purposes, are often the public face of government power, and take petty advantages — which is why they are disrespected.

The People’s Liberation Army
But..but.. I thought the "Peoples Liberation Army" was supposed to LIBERATE the peoples not oppress them. So much for truth in advertising.

“In China, there isn’t any law except what the Communist Party says it is at any particular moment.”

Kind of reminds me of the ever morphing obamacare.

On top of all of this, you have lots of young men, who now vastly outnumber the women in China thanks to the one-child policy and the aborting of female babies.
