me | 5-4-14 | logitech

I need some local help to get from IAH to Webster,TX. Then, later from South Post Oak Rd to IAH. Mapquest sends me way around the loop.

Exit the IAH airport via Will Clayton (east) rather than JFK (south).

You're the second person I've seen say this... Do you REALLY think it makes that much difference?

From the terminal, I'd probably take Will Clayton. But, from the rental car center? JFK south is pretty easy.. they have a flyover left exit right onto Beltway 8 east... traffic is rarely that bad in that area.

You have to go north (wrong way) to Will Clayton. I don't see how it saves any time??

Ditto on post #18 on the return trip from South Post Oak to IAH via the Hardy Toll Road. If it is rush hour, you should take it. You have to get on the 610 Loop going north.

Also, the OTC expo is at the Reliant Center. That is located on 610 Loop South. My earlier directions will take you right past it when going from Webster to South Post Oak. You would exit Kirby or Fannin if you intend to park there.

yea.. well. Don’t blame them. There are ZERO hotel rooms, anywhere in Houston this week. I’m staying at a freaking Motel 6!!! Normally, I’m in a Holiday Inn or Hyatt.

Your morning commute should be your larger worry. It will easily take you and hour... and, there’s really only one way to go. I-45, to 610 loop.

BTW>> S Post Oak isn’t really in the medical center area... WHERE on Post Oak are you going?

You are right. It depends on which rental car company is used. Some are on JFK, and some are on Will Clayton.

IF the rental car is picked up on Will Clayton, then Will Clayton takes you easily to 59 South.

IF the car rental is on JFK, I would go south to Beltway 8 and then head east for a mile to 59 South. That’s just me.

If the time of day is 7-930 a.m. I would consider the Hardy Toll Road into Houston to avoid some of the inbound traffic. Otherwise, 59 South is better.

Try google maps. It sends you down 59 to I45 to Webster. Use your starting and ending addresses.

The difference is that if you take JFK, you then have to get on the beltway to either IH45 or US59. Hitting 59 from WCP and going south eliminates two interchanges from the logitech's route, easier for a visitor unfiamilar with the lay of the land to make fewer transitions, the old KISS principle

logitech, the freeways in Houston are marked very well, keep your eyes up and you'll have plenty of warning when you are approaching an interchange.

Ok.. thanks. I think, pretty much ALL rental cars are on JFK now. They ALL moved there a few years ago.

how bad can the traffic be in downtown Houston at 5pm?”

Downtown is just one issue and, overall, not one of the real traffic producers. Considering that 250,000 people have moved here in the last two years, that it is the 4th largest city in the U.S. now and all its residents are on the Katy Freeway, 59, 45 or 288 at 5 p.m., not bad! LOL.

If you get lost, just get on the 610 loop. 59, 288, 45, Beltway 8, Hardy Toll Road all have exits going both directions eventually.

Since you’re going to be near Kemah when you’re in Webster, might want to go there for dinner. Good seafood abounds, you can sit outside and watch the sailboats come in.

Yea... I like the concept. But, from the rental car facility? The signage going north, over to Will Clayton is actually quite confusing. I drive there all the time, and I sometimes get screwed up going that way... end up circling a terminal. :-(

It's a pretty straight shot on JFK to B-8 (left exit flyover) then to I-59 South. (also a direct exit ramp). Not sure how it could be any easier. ??

Looks to be about a mile south of SHT. It’s a dialysis clinic.

I'm a local so only deal with the parking lots, not familiar with the rental facilities' locations so may not be qualified to give directions from that perspective.

logitech,

Post Oak and South Post Oak are two different roads, the link I put in my first reply was to Post Oak. South Post Oak is on the southwest corner of Loop 610 and goes south from there.

I did not realize that. I have not used any of them there for many years. I usually fly from Hobby when possible. I only use IAH very rarely. I lived in that area for a few years, but it has changed a lot.

Why in the world would the travel agent book you a hotel room in Webster if your class is going to be from Tuesday through Friday on S Post Oak?

Ok.. well, that changes everything. Sorry, when I hear someone say "S Post Oak", I immediately think "Galleria Area". You are WAY south of there.

From there? Frankly... Yea, I'd take SHT all the way North to the airport. It's not "traffic-free"...but, it's sure to be better than anything direct.

Here's the deal: If you PAY the tolls as you go, you'll pass ~ 4 toll booths at $1.75 each. IF you're on an expense account, most rental cars come with an EZ Pass system, that allows you to bypass the toll booths. They will send you a bill, about 2 weeks later.. that will probably be ~ $17. My company pays for them, so, I don't sweat them. But... if yours doesn't? Then, just pay the tolls as you go. They're not that bad.

When going from Webster to there.. DEFINITELY take the Beltway 8 toll road... It will be worth it. Likely only take you 30-40 minutes, maybe less. .. Not nearly as bad as where I thought you were going.

Houston's a fun place.. with LOTS of good food... try to enjoy it.

It's because of the OTC conference.... I mean, seriously. I'm Platinum status for Holiday Inn AND Hyatt hotels.. there are NO HI or Hyatt rooms in Houston available for next week... and, haven't been for at least the past 3 weeks. The closest Holiday Inn room was in Sealy!!! (I considered it)

I'd guess, there are close to 90,000 out of town guests coming in this week.... STAY HOME, if you're a local.

Concur, no tolls (at least for now). This is a good route.
