I'm attending a school on some machines I'll be working on. Couldn't get a flight into Hobby or a reasonably priced hotel close to the school.
All driving times are peak in traffic. Uggh!
How much are the tolls?
It works okay for me. Plus you can adjust the route to avoid tolls.
Also, does your rental car have a navigation system? You have to be careful, though because the car nav system may not avoid tolls. It should but it doesn't.
It’s Houston. Abandon all hope. Carry.

Could you phone or email someone at the school and ask for suggestions?
Looks like no tolls, but thats a guess.
There were some strange ways of making left turns and u-turns on some of those highways with service roads on each side. Driving wasn't that bad.
I would recommend asking about where to eat. There are plenty of the same old change places when in a hurry but there are also plenty of local places. I don't remember any of them by name but I recommend the one that was just off the next just past my hotel.
I used to live in Webster, but that was a long time ago.
Are you in a rental car? Many of the car rental agencies rip you off on tolls. On the Dallas system, it’s all automated and you don’t have an option of throwing money into a basket. Some of the Houston toll booths take cash, some don’t last time I checked. On the booths that do take cash, it’s more expensive than a tag.
To answer your question, I find the Sam Houston beltway well worth the cost. You can use the free interstates as an alternative (45, 610, Southwest Freeway) but if you aren’t used to big city traffic, it can be risky. On a cash basis, it’s going to be 3 or 4 booths at $1.75 a pop to go 45, SHT, SW Fwy. (avoid the Hardy toll road - it never made any sense to me).
Not knowing the road construction currently, I’d take US59 S to IH 610 E/S to IH 45 S.
If you are talking pre 8am and 4pm for return then it maybe a crap shoot any where
based upon accidents, etc. Good luck.
From IAH take the toll road straight to 45 and proceed to Webster. I believe it is toll free between the airport and 45. The only toll road that would save you any time is the Hardy Toll Road, but that would only save you a few minutes. It’s a very long drive, and count on it taking at least 45 minutes to an hour.
Step #1: Log on to amazon.com
Step #2: Order a Garmin GPS for 77 bucks
Step #3: Plug it in
Step #4: Start driving and follow the directions.
Two ways out of the terminal, JFK Blvd and Will Clayton Pkwy. Take WCP east to US 59, go south. When you get near downtown, get to the right side of the freeway, take the IH 45 south exit. Depending on your Webster exit, you might want to take Eldorado Blvd, Bay Area Blvd, NASA Parkway, (formely NASA Rd 1). From Post Oak back to IAH, depending where you are on Post Oak, get on US 59 north. Stay on 59 past downdown and beyond. Take the Will Clayton Parkway exit and go west to IAH. Easy. http://mapq.st/1ncm7k6
I use WAZE.
Fly into San Antonio and drive from there! It will be the same drive time.
Not joking.
IAH to Webster is nearly a straight shot on 59-South and I-45 / Gulf Freeway- South. Exit the IAH airport via Will Clayton (east) rather than JFK (south). Take 59 South to I-45 South. There are alternative routes to get to I-45, but unless there is a major accident along this route, it is probably the best way. Traffic will come to a crawl on I-45 / Gulf Freeway once you get to the South Beltway. If you have an additional passenger, you could probably bypass some of the traffic at that point by using the HOV lanes.
Webster to South Post Oak (if you mean near the Galleria Mall by the 610 West Loop) is easiest to reach by taking I-45 / Gulf Freeway north to the 610 Loop westbound and exiting around San Felipe. (The Galleria Mall is at Westheimer and Post Oak just one block west of 610.) Don’t confuse Post Oak and S Post Oak. South Post Oak is one block further west on San Felipe.
Neither of these two routes involve toll roads. If you do need to take a toll road, most of the tolls range from 50 cents to $1.75 with most trips around Beltway 8 passing a couple of these. There may be toll roads that you cannot access without an EZ Tag (Westpark, for example). If you accidentally get on one of these, you can call the toll authority and pay the toll over the phone.
Ditto on post #18 on the return trip from South Post Oak to IAH via the Hardy Toll Road. If it is rush hour, you should take it. You have to get on the 610 Loop going north.
Also, the OTC expo is at the Reliant Center. That is located on 610 Loop South. My earlier directions will take you right past it when going from Webster to South Post Oak. You would exit Kirby or Fannin if you intend to park there.
Try google maps. It sends you down 59 to I45 to Webster. Use your starting and ending addresses.
