TX: Story Changes on Open Carry Jack in the Box "Hoax"
Gun Watch ^ | 17 May, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

Posted on 05/16/2014 3:32:14 PM PDT by marktwain

There is an interesting short paragraph in a wfaa.com/AP story from Arlington, Texas.   Arlington is next door to Fort Worth, where the widely reported story of Jack in the Box employees being so frightened of some open carriers that they locked themselves in the freezer.  From the Forbes version of the story, directly based on an email from the Fort Worth Police:

In Fort Worth, Texas last week, employees took to the fast food outlet’s freezer, hiding among the frozen burger patties until squad cars arrived at the scene.

“Officers spoke with Jack in the Box employees who reported that they feared for their lives and believed they were being robbed,” said the Fort Worth Police Department in a statement.

"They locked themselves inside a freezer for protection out of fear that the rifle-carrying men would rob them."
There turned out to be numerous problems with that account.  Employees claimed they never said it.  Jack in the Box officials deny their employees were in fear of their lives or locked themselves in a freezer.    There was only one 911 call, and it was not from  the restaurant, and did not describe anything threatening.  The open carriers have always stated that they went inside, ordered, received their food, paid and left.  It is all covered here.

Anyone who works in a restaurant knows that it is impossible to lock oneself in a walk in freezer or cooler.

Now to the mention in the wfaa.com/AP story about open carriers in Arlington, Texas.   It is buried about halfway down the story:
Both Open Carry Tarrant County and Open Carry Texas dispute a recent Fort Worth police report that a fast food restaurant worker hid in the freezer recently during a demonstration, or a "walk," as Open Carry Tarrant County prefers to call it.
Notice the changes in the story.   Now it is just "a fast food restaurant worker" not "workers".   This is a big change, because it becomes clear there was no mass panic, and makes it consistent  with the account of the open carriers.  It is possible that one worker was in the cooler for the brief time that the open carriers were being served.   Notice that now, no one claims that people "locked themselves in a freezer", because that is impossible.   But the biggest inconsistency is not in those changes.  Now that the story has been modified, rolled back, and sanitized, the biggest change is the claim that this modified story is  the one that the open carriers disputed.

As the story from wfaa.com/AP comes with dual attribution, it is not clear who made those changes.  I have not seen either Open Carry Texas or Open Carry Tarrant County respond to this changed account yet.

Could it be AP that has modified the story, then claiming that the Open carry groups dispute the *modified* story? I cannot tell from the wfaa.com/AP article. Could it simply be a case of laziness or error?

Apparently Open Carry Texas has split with Open Carry Tarrant County if the following is accurate,..

http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/Open-Carry-supporters-again-259141581.html

Open Carry Texas, the statewide organization that spawned Open Carry Tarrant County,
cut ties with the local group last week because of a disagreement on how their
signature protests are carried out.

“I live in FW and heard nothing about this.”

Lots of media out there. I actively monitor firearms and Second Amendment stories, so I saw it in several places.

I’m astonished no one was killed as a result of this stunt.

These morons forgot the adage that all politics is personal. Did they put themselves in the shoes of those fast food workers before their demonstration?

I used to work at a fast food place. If a group of armed guys entered, of course I would have thought we were being robbed — not because I hate the 2nd Amendment, but because I’m not an idiot.

And after the adrenaline had subsided, you can bet such an incident would turn me against the right to carry a weapon, regardless of the 2nd Amendment. Thanks, d-bags, for the terror sandwich I didn’t order.

Why not push back on the ones who are really trying to take your guns away? Would these Bravehearts dare show up at police headquarters, for example, with their long guns to pick up bicycle safety pamphlets? Doubt it.

No props for terrorizing businesses staffed by unarmed women and immigrants, as most fast food places are these days. And no converts to the defense of the 2nd Amendment with stunts like that.

Already been done, several times.

They were just stopping to get some food, there was no panic. The police and media concocted the panic.

I live in Grapevine and also didn’t hear of this until it popped up on FR.

WFAA is a liberal Dallas affiliate of ABC. I never watch that channel.

Very misleading by either WFAA or AP.

The group doing an open carry walk was not “protesting” anything. They were just showing people that it’s legal to open carry rifles and that they shouldn’t be afraid.

GOOD GRIEF! You talk like they were holding the weapons and swinging them around while having a nervous breakdown.

I don’t watch TV or read the (red) Star Telegram. Too much crap. Instead we’re radio listeners. This story didn’t make it to the stations I listen to. We’re spared the propaganda unless I see it on the internet. It’s not as bad as Dallas here but “Tolerant” County is bad enough and getting worse.

WFAA is most offensive.
