Most Democratic Party house media organs staying clear as lonely lefty writers struggle to deflect.
Theres a growing sense that, at least for now, the Bergdahl/Taliban exchange and its fallout has the left spooked.
Maybe Obama will wriggle out of this mess, too, either by way of the same tricks that have extricated him from so-called scandals such as Benghazi, or by distracting us in some new and horrific way. Or maybe there will be a hurricane somewhere that can provide a serendipitous photo-op to impress those Americans who have political attention-deficit disorder.
But at the moment this story, probably more than any other incident of Obamas presidency, is one that makes him look bad. It appears to simultaneously expose his disregard for the safety of America and Americans, his sympathy for fundamentalist Islamist governments, his failure to do his homework, his drive towards greater executive power, his disregard for Congress (including some members of both parties) and the law itself, his mendacity, and the stupidity and collaboration of his advisors in all of the above.
I may have left something out, but you get the idea.
The military men and women who served with Bergdahl and on whom Obama counted to keep their mouths shut are (unlike the diplomats in Benghazi) speaking up and telling what they know.
The NY Times and Time and other organs that normally can be counted on to carry Obamas water are spilling it all over the place.
That leaves lonely folk such as TNRs Brian Beutler and Esquires Charles P. Pierce doing their level best to convince the world that its only vile Republicans complaining about the swap, and that their carping is motivated by petty politics and a cold attitude towards the suffering of prisoners of war.
But its not taking too well so far, not as well as during previous dustups. Obama and his advisors may be surprised at that because they may not have understood the feelings this story would tap into.
Peter Wehner understands that this story has had a visceral effect, shocking even some people who didnt think themselves shockable anymore about anything Obama might do:
"My response to what has occurred is not just intellectual but visceral. I consider what occurred, when everything is taken into account, to be substantively indefensible and morally dishonorable. The president, in my estimation, has rendered a great service to our enemies, and they know it. (Mullah Omar, the head of the Taliban, hailed the release of the top five Taliban commanders from Guantanamo as a great victory for the mujahideen of Afghanistan.) The presidents decision may well endanger American lives down the road. And his administration has elevated an apparent deserterone whose actions were reported on in the past (see this 2012 Rolling Stone article by Michael Hastings) and who is responsible for the death of fellow soldiers who tried to rescue himinto a hero.
This strikes me as morally grotesque
In this case, its the president and I who occupy different worlds, including different moral worlds."
This story, unlike some of the others, is neither hard to understand nor difficult to follow. It seems awful on its face, and many of the American people are reacting on that same visceral level. For how long they will react that way, however, and to what effect, I do not know.
As evidence of the revulsion towards what Obama has done and towards Bergdahls actions, I present Facebooks Bring Bowe Bergdahl Back page and its fellows:
"A number of individuals who initially supported the pages mission are now having second thoughts as troubling revelations continue to emerge
The page, which is nearly five years old, has about 34,500 likes as of this writing. Other pages, including one called Bowe Bergdahl is a Traitor, have already attracted nearly as much attention in just the past 48 hours.
Administrators of that page are sharing anonymous comments by self-identified soldiers who offer a glimpse into their knowledge of Bergdahl and the circumstances of his ostensible capture by the Taliban.
Comments on the page show an overwhelming shift in public sentiment regarding the prisoner."
When Chris Matthews and Diane Feinstein are among the critics, Obama knows hes got a problem. Jon Stewart, an Obama supporter who was already angry at the Obama administration over the VA hospital scandal, is at least as unhappy about the prisoner exchange, too.
All of this indicates that theres something about this one thatat least temporarilyis achieving a level of disgust with Obama that doesnt seem to have been reached previously. But the only obvious remedy, impeachment, seems to still be politically unavailable. I repeat a question thats been asked before: what would Obama have to due to trigger a real possibility of impeachment in the House leading to actual conviction in the Senate?
Well, if they lose John Stewart, that’s like Cronkite saying that the war is lost.
JK I’m convinced that anybody brain dead enough to vote for jugears twice is evidence that the republic is already lost.
” Im convinced that anybody brain dead enough to vote for jugears twice is evidence that the republic is already lost.”
That has been my contention since his reelection.
Now the leftist sheep are beginning to realize that hope and change is a disaster and they want out.
Nothing. It will take special forces landing on the White House roof to get him out.
They are like the bad parent. if there is an alternative good parent, damn the children, they shall not grow with grace with the good parent.
Greedy Democrats think it is about getting the money when it is about giving the very self and money they demand we give them or their minions. That custody paycheck will always get them spooked... It is all they care about.
Between the police state, alienating the military and even getting DC communist sycophants of the state Department murdered by terrorists (what was what that German preacher said?), they have made progress indeed.
Those who live by the rape denying rights, die by the rape, no more rights after retirement, death panel it is whether you are a former soldier, cop or what have you in a Soviet system.
Of course it does not mean we should let it slide that far to make an example... It is going to be mighty difficult to return and fight back to the small dignity of man.
That Obama fanaticism and blindness to the retardation of Islam is lurid.
Remember Nicholas Berg?
He went to Iraq feeling that, since his intentions were good, this would be recognized and the enemy would do him no harm. He was beheaded on video.
Everyone’s been looking for the Obama central foreign policy doctrine, and with this episode we see it clearly. Obama feels that appeasement and good intentions will shield us from harm when, all that happens is the enemy dis-respects us more, thereby inviting further mayhem and attacks on our interests.
Obama has the same mindset as Nicholas Berg, only now it’s our head on the chopping block.
Obama is an adherent of the Nicholas Berg school of foreign policy.
That Obama fanaticism and blindness to the retardation of Islam is lurid.
I just dropped a few words.. Obama retardation
Obama is a drug-addled madman. When are the democrats going to rein him in?
How a person can go to Two places of Honor, tradition and History, after treating people who are so much a part of those histories, with such contempt,The VA mess, the hailing of a traitor as a hero, just shows what a Reprobate this Individual is. It’s almost diabolical how full of himself and delusional this So called President is.
Folks I really fear for our survival for 2 more years with this insane man child at the helm
It won’t stop the jug-eared moron. In fact, I’m betting theat he will increase and accelerate the damage he seeks to inflict on the country, as it seems obvious no one will stop the POS.
That's the guy whose father who blamed America for his son's death, rather than the mutants who actually decapitated his son.
Sick people have confused children.
I think the three major ‘POW/MIA Biker’ groups out there ought to have whatever people that run their websites (while they’re evidently out riding around on their motorcycles and not paying the slightest attention to the news) log on and delete their “Welcome Home Hero Bowe Bergdahl!” pages because they’re looking like quite the jackasses for supporting this traitor fink.
That’s just my opinion. Maybe they don’t care a whit about Bergdahl’s circumstances as long as they can pretend he’s a POW and use him as an excuse to ride around on their Harleys going vroom vroom vroom and waving the American flag like it belongs to their organization alone.
This won’t last. Just as the controversy about Bergdahl’s release was timed to push the VA off the front pages, the next “crisis” will take center stage.
The Bergdahl matter will be a distant speck of a memory in two weeks. Nothing will come of it after the requisite week of rhetorical clucking winds down.
I daresay they're working hard on Bergdahl's Travonization. Watch for more glowing reports re what a great "kid" he is.
“Now the leftist sheep are beginning to realize that hope and change is a disaster and they want out.”
You’re giving leftards too much credit for employing critical thinking... something of which they’re incapable. They’re too emotionally bonded with Obama and their sacred cause of America’s destruction to want out.
They're struggling right now to define swift-boating as a fabrication or falsification for malicious intent rather than exposing the truth. Tingles had a tizzy about this the other night on TV and was very strident is his insistence that Kerry had been subjected to false accusations.
They have won the battle to redefine gay as homosexual.
I hate euphemisms. They obscure truth. I like it called as it is.
Not all neologisms are euphemisms, of course. Travonization for example.
