it’s funny that this question is being asked.
For registry cleaning and de-frag I use Auslogics
but what about junk files? Now when I go to my recycle bin
and delete all the crap in there (Mostly videos I am finished looking at)—am I getting rid of my junk files?
If not, pls tell me free program to get rid of them.

Chances are excellent that your temporary internet files folder is jam-packed full, no matter which browser you use. Go into your browser and delete the temporary internet files folder, history, cookies, etc.

Then, do a defrag.

Registry cleaners, as another poster has said, are dangerous. They can delete needed registry entries and actually put malware on your machine. Avoid using them unless you know which boxes to check and uncheck before you run the ‘cleaning’ part of the program.

CCleaner at www.cnet.com has free programs. You can buya program, or use free versions. Most computers have a defrag program and there is registry cleaning in the CCleaner. You can read about it first at Cnet.

So far, I’ve had no trouble with CCleaner. I run it once a week.

I choose the option to delete cookies each time but I make exceptions for those few sites where I have passwords, addresses, and the like. Same with FreeRepublic, so I don’t have to log on every week and restore my choices.

I also use the option to clean extraneous stuff from the registry. So far, no problems, but you may want to be careful with that.

All good suggestions for 3rd-party Utilities…

Windows also has a built-in disk cleaning command, which is invoked with the Disk Cleanup button in the Drive Properties. At the Command Prompt, you can Set up a custom configuration via 3-digit code, to include any number of items you wish to clean up e.g. Empty the Recycle Bin, Windows Update backups, Temporary Files, etc:

cleanmgr.exe /sageset:###

Then afterward, either from the prompt or using a Shortcut you can Run the utility with this configuration reference. For example,

cleanmgr.exe /sagerun:200

This action does NOT defragment the hard drive like Defraggler & similar utilities do, but will get rid of junk & free up disk space.

For general purposes, I use msconfig that is part of windows.

Just go in and turn off all the junk you don’t want running. Be very careful. You don’t want to turn off something important.

If it is a nasty, then use the other programs as prescribed by folks above.

I do take care of and protect my PC properly. Why would you suggest I don't?
Because YOU said you annually reformat and reload Windows and "that cleans everything up." Just what are the problems you have that need this "cleaning up?"
BTW, you not only reload Windows, but you also have to go through the entire Win update process; plus reload every other program you use - all of which have lost all of your personal settings ... like browers and bookmarks.
WTH wants to deal with that every year?

If you look up "System Rescue CD" (I recommend ixquick.com for searches), you can download a free bootable iso which will allow you to run a program called PartImage. You can take a snapshot of your disk/OS (preferably a pristine and malware-free version) and save it so you can reload it later.

Works quite well, and does not touch anything on your computer at all. Of course, you will need an external disk or flash drive to save the image to, but since it only copies the data portions of the drive the image is smaller than the actual drive size itself, assuming you are not using all of it.

Like I stated, I actually enjoy the process. It’s like doing crossword puzzles to stimulate one’s mind. I don’t do the reformat/reload OS because I have to, I do it because I choose to.

In addition to Malwarebytes and CCleaner, I like something called Adw cleaner. This does a good job of removing toolbars that install with other software. The toolbars are often trojans that are set up to direct your searches to sites they want you to see. They can really slow things down.
