LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. First lady Michelle Obama addressed the American School Counselor Association at the Disney Swan and Dolphin Hotel on Tuesday morning.
"Thank you for your passion and your dedication. Thank you for refusing to give up," Obama said.
Obama talked about the role school counselors play in getting students and parents the resources they need to pursue higher education.
"The national average is one school counselor for every 471 students, and that's outrageous," Obama said. "They can and should use their budget to create progressive budgets for school counselors."
Obama said school counselors are the key component to her "Reach Higher" program that encourages children to complete their education beyond high school.
"It really looks like she wants to provide care for the care provider in a way that catalyzes our ability to help students, help kids across the country," said Michael Bennie, of Arroyo High School.
Obama also announced a new White House program that will honor a counselor of the year.
"I'm glad that now with the reach we have, the White House, and first lady and the government back our profession," said Esther Noel, a University of Central Florida student.
About 2,000 people attended the speech.
She couldn’t last a day in my stilettos.

This is a really expensive venue for a school counsellor’s meeting. And to hear this baloney? Total waste of lots of money.
About as surprising as rain in the Amazon.
