My Brief Review of Dinesh D'Souza's "America"
Self | 7/4/2014 | St_Thomas_Aquinas

Posted on 07/04/2014 7:04:45 AM PDT by St_Thomas_Aquinas

In contrast to "America"'s promotional campaign, the movie is very tightly organized. It begins with an attention-grabber, asking the question, What would the world be like if we had lost the War for Independence?

After presenting heart-warming patriotic vignettes, D'Souza then asks the jarring question, But what if what we believe about America is false?

He then presents five standard Left wing criticisms of America, portraying America as essentially unjust, founded on acts of pure evil and conquest. He listens quietly and politely as Left Wing 'luminaries,' including Ward Churchill, Elizabeth Warren and Noam Chomsky, present their case.

He then responds to their criticisms, methodically demolishing each argument with cold hard facts.

D'Souza concludes the movie by asking, Who is perpetuating these myths about America, and why?

He shows unflattering video clips of Alinsky, presents a chart of Alinsky's well-known disciples, and finishes by tying in Ayers, Obama and Hilary. It's a very powerful and successful indictment.

D'Souza's effort is masterful. It's an excellent, tightly focused movie, with top-notch production values. Don't miss it.

Saw it and enjoyed it. Good sequel to 2016.

I saw Betty Friedan on the chart.

Hubby and I took our two teenage daughters to see it last night. Probably about 30 people in the theatre. We all enjoyed it. 18 yo took AP US history this past year ( conservative Catholic high school) she enjoyed it very much, but we are a very politically aware family.

Photography was well done. Yes, the message was hopeful but also clear that a savior in the form of Washington, LIncoln or Reagan isn’t on the current national stage but we as citizens need to do our part to restore a truly exceptional nation. His methodical debunking of US history according to Zin was very clear in pointing out that our unique American history is exceptional in the course of humanity. A message that needs to be heard.

The movie left me wondering what can ordinary citizens do especially in light of the purposeful targeting of patriots that is going on at national and local levels. Those of us who are parents must make sure that our chidren learn the truth of American history and its exceptionalism before they leave home, and we must make sure we educate ourselves. There are heroic Americans who are leading this effort. In light of this movie the benefits Rush Limbaugh’s “children’s books” on American history become more clear as do the reasons why the left hate them.

Good point. It may have been a nod to the Tea Parry as well.

The scenes of Hillary are staged, of course, and the filmmakers make that obvious. But there is real footage of Alinsky. One clip that shows him berating demonstrators and saying he’s doing more than they are because he’s out there getting corrupted!

That was excellent. I’ve read Alinsky, but film captures things that print can’t. He comes across as cold and nasty, a lot like Frank Underwood in “House of Cards.”

So correct. The movie is 5 stars in my opinion. It should be a blockbuster. The marketing is a 2 (giving it the benefit of the doubt).

As I watched the second time, I wondered if D'Souza is afraid to offend the progressives who have unified in their goal to destroy America.

we saw it last night too - sad it was in such a small theater (newly redone with less than 40 seats). only one couple left before ALL the credits had run and everyone left clapped at the end.

A young lady working for the theater wished us a good 4th - I responded with “HEED that movie!”

We saw it last night and left before the credits were finished. The reason we left was not because we didn’t like it but because my husbands hip was hurting and he needed to stand up.

As a teen, I would remember that. A simple statement can provoke a lot of thought.

I will see it this weekend. Looking forward to it. I also suggest Deliver Us From Evil. Very well done and based upon (don’t know how tightly) real events in the life of an NYC Sargent.

Worth noting that as a grad student, Saul Alinsky, chose to hang out with Frank Nitti and the members of the Chicago Outfit to study their organizational power structure. Nitti was, of course, the immediate successor to Al Capone after the Big Fella got sent to the penitentiary. Not surprisingly, Alinsky became an extortionist. His protest methods were much like those of the Mafia.

I forgot that. That was news to me.

I am hoping the earnings are somewhat comparable to 2016, as we need this genre to thrive and they key to sustainability is profit.

I thought the color saturation was a little high and I wish he would have expanded on the segment regarding Saul Alinsky —the role of this venal insect was so far-reaching for American “progressivism” that Alinsky could merit his own film, really. I agree with the criticism that the title, “America” somehow falls short of the mark, in spite of July 4th, and even though somehow the best movie titles are the shortest.

I think Dinesh’s phased release strategy and his marketing to church congregations and via Limbaugh is effective —I saw the movie on the first showing of the first day in my area (which was one day prior to the official release date) but for the first time in 15 years my FreeperShip was suspended and so I could not write the timely film review that this film merited —really terrible luck.

I thought Dinesh handled the felony question perfectly —head-on and direct, no, “but I didn’t inhale” shenanigans, something that is actually counter-productive.

I did prefer the first film but I think if you are a Conservative but neglect to see this film with all your friends then you are freaking crazy.
