My Brief Review of Dinesh D'Souza's "America"
Self | 7/4/2014 | St_Thomas_Aquinas

Posted on 07/04/2014 7:04:45 AM PDT by St_Thomas_Aquinas

In contrast to "America"'s promotional campaign, the movie is very tightly organized. It begins with an attention-grabber, asking the question, What would the world be like if we had lost the War for Independence?

After presenting heart-warming patriotic vignettes, D'Souza then asks the jarring question, But what if what we believe about America is false?

He then presents five standard Left wing criticisms of America, portraying America as essentially unjust, founded on acts of pure evil and conquest. He listens quietly and politely as Left Wing 'luminaries,' including Ward Churchill, Elizabeth Warren and Noam Chomsky, present their case.

He then responds to their criticisms, methodically demolishing each argument with cold hard facts.

D'Souza concludes the movie by asking, Who is perpetuating these myths about America, and why?

He shows unflattering video clips of Alinsky, presents a chart of Alinsky's well-known disciples, and finishes by tying in Ayers, Obama and Hilary. It's a very powerful and successful indictment.

D'Souza's effort is masterful. It's an excellent, tightly focused movie, with top-notch production values. Don't miss it.

I'm not as impressed by the marketing effort, however. "America" is too broad a title. Something provocative, like "America the Evil?," would have garnered much more attentionn, would have been much more memorable, and would have generated greater buzz.

Going in, I didn't know what to expect. If I didn't already trust D'Souza, I would have never risked the price of a ticket.

D'Souza recommends bringing a friend. Please do, if you're able. The movie would probably be most persuasive to someone in the mushy middle. Left wingers don't seem to do well with direct contradictions. Ideally, bring a teenager or young adult, someone who may have already imbibed Howard Zinn's version of America.

The “Imagine the world without her” subtitle wasn’t explored in the movie after the opening. That would have been interesting. Nevertheless it was an excellent, thought-provoking movie. Hope it does well.

Good to know. I must admit his last movie left me so uneasy and frightened for our country, so I have been a little hesitant to go and see this one. It is much needed though. Like you, not knowing what to expect, I had not decided whether to go and see it. Now I believe I will. Thanks

I went last night, and did drag a friend...somebody who usually considers herself, “too busy for politics.” It was an eye opener for her.

Sadly, the folks who NEED to see it won’t based on some lib/prog/socialist/commie/dimokkkrat screed that it’s a T-party movie just being racis’ against the lyin’king. Even sadder is that there are reportedly still 48% of voters who still support the lyin’king. We should be frightened for our country. Lucky for us he’s turned the economy around huh? LOL! Despite that, it’s the 4th of July so celebrate.

Perfect. Glad to hear that it was an eye-opener for her. Let the buzz begin...

Apparently, it's very important for the movie to do well in the opening week, so that more theaters will carry it. The strategy worked well with his first movie.

We saw it last night, your review was excellent. You didn’t mention the artistic presentation of our early history, the costumes and settings of the beginnings of our country were fantastic!

I saw it last night and was amazed... it was a superb movie. Everyone in the audience clapped when it was done.

I think he left that question to be answered by the viewers. I figured it out for myself.

Could be. What he did was pan over a very large chart, which included at least 100 people, ending up at Zero in the lower corner. (He also spoke quite a bit about Obama's community organizing background).

I noticed Marshall Davis, Obama's childhood mentor.

My guess is that this chart had two purposes. The first was to end up at Zippy. The second was for DVD viewing, where the interested viewer could freeze the frame.

If anyone can remember any more faces from that chart, please post.

Same at ours. There were about 12 people, which wasn't too bad for a Thursday night, in Massachusetts 8-).

I can tell you one thing, this DVD is going to my nieces and nephews. I may also send some with no return address ;-)

They were, but I thought their uniforms were too clean 8-)

I must admit his last movie left me so uneasy and frightened for our country, so I have been a little hesitant to go and see this one.

The Leftist critique of America isn't as immediate a problem as an impending presidential election, and the tone of this movie is hopeful. In his conclusion, D'Souza says that the mission of our generation is to "restore America." It's an inspiring and hopeful message, especially compared to "2016."

When the chart was on the screen I remember wishing I had my TV remote so I could stop the action and study the names and faces. I was happy that it ended up with Obozo!

He shows her personally meeting with him (!) as a high schooler, which was shocking news to me. He also shows her typing up her college thesis, which was about bringing "community organizing" inside the political system. D'Souza states that explicitly.

Yeah, the media won't like this.

How do you get friends like that? If I dragged a liberal friend, they would be out in the lobby buying popcorn, fooling with their I-phone and sighing loudly. It would be a miserable experience for me! I’m dragging my husband who, unfortunately, is strictly nonpolitical.
