FL: Gun Mufflers now Legal for Hunting Game
Gun Watch ^ | 22 November, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted yesterday to remove an antiquated regulation that prevented hunters from protecting their hearing.   The regulation banned the use of gun mufflers for the taking of game.  From the nraila:

Following the suppressor vote, the Commission also voted to authorize an Executive Order to lift the ban immediately and allow hunting with suppressors to begin at once.

Following that vote, Executive Order # EO 14-32 was signed. Using suppressor-equipped rifles, pistols and shotguns is now legal for all hunting in Florida.

Map from American Suppressor Association.

Using gun mufflers, sometimes referred to as suppressors or "silencers", has never been illegal in Florida.   For some poorly documented reason, language was inserted into the Florida fish and game regulations in 1957, to make hunting with gun mufflers illegal.  Today, 21 November, 2014, that language was removed.  Now 33 states allow gun mufflers for all legal hunting.  One state, Montana, only allows gun mufflers for hunting varmints.  There are 11 states that do not allow ordinary citizens to own gun mufflers, and five that do not allow them for hunting.

In Europe, gun mufflers are far less controlled than in the United States.  In most countries, their use is considered to be good manners.

“gun mufflers”
It’s going to take me a while to get used to that phrase. Heh.

So exactly how does a suppressor aid the deer or hog hunter, besides protecting his hearing, especially if you are using a supersonic round? The animal still hears a crack, right?

I thought use of one required a federal permit.

My friend has several automatic weapons. Sheriff of his county has to sign off. Has to carry the proof from the feds with him when he uses them.

Been to the gun range with him. Can burn through some bullets.

Could’ve sworn the ‘silencer’ (is a misnomer as it doesn’t silence the discharge or sound like it does in the movies) required fed permission as well.

Any crack the animal hears didn’t kill it.

"The animal still hears a crack, right?"

The animal will hear nothing if a good marksman is doing the shooting

Protecting the hearing, mainly.

My brother jumped through the federal hoops to get mufflers for some of his firearms. It is much safer for my hearing for me to hunt with him now.

I've already lost over 70% of my hearing, wear muffs and earplugs when shooting unmuffled firearms.

Muffled firearms make a big difference for those of us that are hearing impaired and don't want to lose any more hearing.

Yep. The 'silencer' requires a tax stamp from the feds right now. It needs to go away, but it isn't as bad as some might think. 6 months to get one.

I was told it was due to poaching, or the fear thereof. Seems that the Depression caused Bambi and family to be guests of honor on many a table during that period.

Thanks. Good explanation. So even wearing ear protection, you attribute your substantial hearing loss to firearms? Wow. Does your occupation require firearms, or are you just a sportsman? How many round/week on average have you been going through, over how many years?

Loud jets and big guns killed most of my hearing. And server fans, believe it or not.

I used to own an AR-50. That was plenty loud.

I won't discuss how many rounds I may or may not use in any given time period.
